In a case frame image possessing an amount of data greater than a predetermined amount is recorded on a magnetic tape using a multiplicity of tracks, on which tracks the data has been recorded is made clear. Image data composed of 1,400,000 pixels, which is four times that of the conventional number of 350,000 pixels, is obtained. Since the image data has an amount of data that is four times that in a frame image when photography is performed using the conventional 350,000-pixel CCD, the image data is recorded in a video recording area one frame at a time on ten tracks per frame, for a total of 40 tracks. Auxiliary-area recording data representing on which tracks the recorded image data has been recorded and the manner in which the recorded image has been partitioned is recorded in an auxiliary recording area. One frame of a still picture is produced after reference is made to the auxiliary-area recording data that has been recorded in the auxiliary recording area. An image can be reproduced promptly even though an image having a large amount of data is recorded on the recording tape upon being partitioned.

Both a sharp print image and a natural reproduced move image can be obtained from a signal recorded on a recording medium. A recording signal, read from the recording medium, is converted into digital data and is delayed by one field. Data representing the current image in the n-th field and data representing an image in the (n-1)-th field one field ahead of the current image, are applied to a subtracting circuit, to extract a component representing moving image portions. An interpolated image for making movement correction is created from the extracted component representing the moving image portions by an interpolating circuit. Data representing the interpolated image and the data representing the current image in the n-th field are synthesized by a synthesizing circuit, to output composite data as data representing an image which has been subjected to movement correction. Since the image is subjected to the movement correction, a natural reproduced movie image smoothly moving is obtained even when the recording signal is recorded at high shutter speed.

Photographic images are recorded by picking up a group of photographic images recorded in horizontal and vertical positions in substantially equally dimensioned frames to store in a storage medium video signals representative of the photographic images in the order of the group of photographic images. One of the many frame orientations, including the vertical and the horizontal positions, of the images recorded in the respective frames is selected. Then, out of the group of images, those which are in the selected orientation are selected. For the images in the vertical position, a magnification for forming a video signal which is smaller than that for the images in the horizontal position is set up. The selected photographic image is picked up to store a video signal representative of it in a store position of the storage medium assigned thereto. The selection, pickup and storage are performed on each of the photographic images which are in the selected frame orientation. Thereafter, the above procedure is repeated for the remaining necessary frame orientations.
