    摘要: A liquid crystal device is constituted by disposing a chiral smectic liquid crystal between a pair of substrates each provided with an electrode and a uniaxial alignment film. The chiral smectic liquid crystal is placed in such a quasi-smectic A alignment state that the liquid crystal molecules will have a single average molecular axis under no electric field application on a lower temperature side within chiral smectic C phase range, wherein the single average molecular axis can be confirmed as a position providing the darkest state when observed through cross nicol polarizers. Such a quasi-smectic A alignment state is effective in providing a liquid crystal device (or display apparatus) having an improved shock resistance and a good low-temperature storage properties.

    摘要: Driving apparatus including scanning electrodes and data electrodes, a liquid crystal assuming first and second optical states according to the polarity of a writing voltage applied thereto and disposed between the scanning and data electrodes, scanning-side and drive-side drivers, and a controller for controlling these drivers. The scanning-side drive supplies first and second scanning selections signals having mutually different voltage wave forms to the scanning electrodes so that the first and second scanning selection signals are applied alternately in respective vertical scanning periods. The data-side driver supplies data pulses to the data electrodes in synchronism with the first and second scanning selection signals so as to form one picture in at least four vertical scanning periods. The controller controls the scanning-side and data-side drivers so as to scroll each picture in at least four vertical scanning periods.

    摘要: A ferroelectric liquid crystal composition, comprising at least three mesomorphic compounds represented by the following formula (I): ##STR1## wherein C* denotes an asymmetric carbon atom; E denotes a mesomorphic compound residue including a divalent 6-membered ring-containing group capable of having a substituent; and A and B are mutually different groups respectively selected from the class of (a) methyl group, (b) linear or branched alkyl groups having 2-18 carbon atoms capable of having a substituent, (c) linear or branched alkyloxy groups having 1-18 carbon atoms, (d) linear or branched alkyloxyalkyl groups having 2-18 carbon atoms, (e) linear or branched alkyloxycarbonyl groups having 2-18 carbon atoms, (f) linear or branched alkyloxycarbonylmethyl groups having 3-18 carbon atoms; (g) chlorine or bromine, (h) fluorine, (i) trifluoromethyl group, and (j) cyano group; the above-mentioned at least three mesomorphic compounds belonging to at least three mutually different series of compounds which are different from each other in the combination of the groups A and B attached to the asymmetric carbon atom respectively selected from any one of the sub-classes (a)-(j).

    摘要: A liquid crystal device showing improved uniform alignment characteristic and switching characteristic is constituted by a pair of an upper substrate and a lower substrate, and a chiral smectic liquid crystal disposed between the upper and lower substrates. Each of the upper and lower substrates has thereon an electrode for applying a voltage to the liquid crystal and a uniaxial alignment film. The alignment films on the upper and lower substrates are provided with uniaxial alignment axes which cross each other so that the direction of crossing of the uniaxial alignment axes from the lower substrate to the upper substrate is identical to the direction of helical twist in cholesteric phase of the chiral smectic liquid crystal, and the chiral smectic liquid crystal is disposed in such an alignment state that the liquid crystal shows a pretilt angle .alpha., a cone angle H, an inclination angle .delta. of SmC.sup.* layer, and an apparent tilt angle .theta.a satisfying relationships of: H .theta.a>H/2. The crossing direction may preferably have a polarity (taken as "positive" in clockwise direction and "negative" in anticlockwise direction) which is the same as the polarity of the spontaneous polarization of the liquid crystal.
