    摘要: A process for assisting the function of a heart disposed within a body, and comprising an outer wall, comprising the steps of measuring at least one parameter that is indicative of the function of the heart, applying a compressive force to a portion of the outer wall of the heart, and applying an expansive force to the portion of the outer wall of the heart. The process is preferably performed with an apparatus comprising a cup-shaped shell having an exterior wall, an interior wall, an apex, and an upper edge; a liner having an outer surface and an inner surface, an upper edge joined to said interior wall of the cup-shaped shell, and a lower edge joined of the interior wall of the cup-shaped shell, thereby forming a cavity between the outer surface thereof and the interior wall of the shell; and a drive fluid cyclically interposed within the cavity, the drive fluid applying a uniform force on a portion of the outer wall of the heart.

The device has a magnetic shield, and the magnetic shield contains a layer of nanomagnetic material; such layer has a morphological density of at least 98 percent; and it is bonded to the medical device by means of an interlayer with a thickness of less than about 10 microns. The nanomagnetic material in such layer has a saturation magnetization of from about 1 to about 36,000 Gauss, a coercive force of from about 0.01 to about 5,000 Oersteds, a relative magnetic permeability of from about 1 to about 500,000, and an average particle size of less than about 100 nanometers.

    摘要: Apparatus for treating a web with a fluid comprises means defining an elongated channel for receiving the web. The fluid is injected into the channel on opposite sides of the web at one or more injection sites. Fluid is evacuated from the channel on opposite sides of the web at one or more evacuation sites. Each injection site is located between two evacuation sites and spaced therefrom such that fluid will flow in opposite directions from the injection site to the adjacent evacuation sites with laminar flow and be evacuated from the channel when the boundary layer of the fluid reaches a predetermined thickness.

    摘要: An apparatus and method for molding plastic pipettes are disclosed, using an upper and lower mold plate that define a cavity which forms the outer surface of the pipette. The mold parting line of the upper and lower mold plates is located at a position between the ends of the cavity to prevent "radial" flash at the aperture of the pipette. "Axial" flash at the aperture of the pipette is prevented by a lower core pin in the lower mold plate. The lower core pin extends into the cavity and defines the dimensions of the aperture of the pipette. The extension of the lower core pin from the lower mold plate minimizes tool wear at the aperture and makes the alignment of the upper and lower mold plates at the orifice less critical.
