The second distance range is a distance range where the principal object exists and is over the first distance range. A first range image and second range image, are formed according to the image signals. Blank portions are designated within the second range image by comparison of the first range image and second range image, to compensate for the blank portions.

In recording an image on a recording medium such as photographic film, position information used for the detection of a principal image is recorded on the recording medium. The position information is read when a hard copy of the image is produced. A characteristic value is derived from within the area of the principal image detected in accordance with the position information. A print exposure amount used for producing a hard copy is determined in accordance with the characteristic value. The position information may be the information directly or indirectly representing the position of the primary image. The indirect representation may be a combination of a subject distance and a focal length of a taking lens. This combination determines a reference size of a face or figure image on a frame. By detecting an image having the same size as the reference size, the principal image such as a facial image or a figure image can be identified.

An automatic focusing adjusting device for use in a camera is disclosed in which an operation processing on the phase difference detection to be executed when the focusing of an image pickup optical system is detected can be performed by means of an analog signal processing. In the automatic focusing adjusting device, when the distance measurement ranges in a light receiving part of sensor means are specified by operation means, then control means controls charge input preventive means in such a manner that only the signal electric charges that are stored in photoelectric conversion elements forming the light receiving part but belonging to the other distance measurement ranges that the ranges specified by the operation means are prevented from flowing into a readout part in the sensor means, whereby the distance measurement ranges in the light receiving part of the sensor means can be changed. Also, in the adjusting device, based on the output signal of the operation means or on the distance measurement information obtained from the sensor means, the distance measurement ranges in the light receiving part of the sensor means can be changed and the changed versions of the distance measurement ranges can be visibly displayed on display means.
