Abstract: A polycrystalline diamond is formed on a substrate to form a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutter for a tool. The polycrystalline diamond has a cross-sectional dimension of at least 4 millimeters. The substrate includes tungsten carbide. An outer surface of the PDC cutter is at least partially surrounded with at least a single layer of coating by atomic layer deposition. The single layer of coating is configured to protect the PDC cutter from thermal degradation in response to exposure to a temperature greater than 700 degrees Celsius (° C.) and less than about 1050° C.

Abstract: A method for actuation of a downhole device includes rotating a drill pipe relative to a cylindrical pipe disposed coaxially within the drill pipe. First segments including a first material are disposed on the inner surface of the drill pipe. Second segments including a degradable material are disposed on the outer surface of the cylindrical pipe, with each of the second segments aligned with a corresponding first segment. The first material and the degradable material are insoluble in the downhole fluid, and a solubility of the degradable material in a solvent is greater than a solubility of the first material in the solvent. The method includes generating a first electrical signal pattern during rotation of the drill pipe; introducing the solvent into the drill pipe, in which the degradable material degrades responsive to introduction of the solvent; and generating a second electrical signal pattern after introduction of the solvent.

Abstract: A downhole device that drills a wellbore includes a stabilizer which has a body and blades. The blades are disposed on a surface of the body and each blade has a hollow space. The blades each include a dissolvable window that is disposed on a surface of each of the blades and a light source that emits light to the wellbore. The dissolvable window blocks light emitted from the light source thereby reducing or eliminating light from being transmitted to the wellbore. The dissolvable window dissolves upon exposure to a fluid containing a dissolving medium, thereby allowing the light source to transmit light to the wellbore. Methods of using the downhole device to activate downhole chemicals are also provided.
