Abstract: A composition of an invert emulsion oil-based drilling fluid is provided. The composition may include an oil phase and an aqueous phase. The oil phase may include an oleaginous fluid, an organophilic clay-based solid viscosifier, and a liquid viscosifier including a POSS. Further provided is a method of introducing the composition including the POSS into a wellbore. After introduction of the composition into the wellbore, the method includes maintaining wellbore conditions to provide a stable rheological property for a period up to about 96 hours in an HPHT section of a wellbore.

Abstract: Systems and methods for instructing a device within a wellbore of a subterranean well includes a drill string with an actuator assembly extending into the subterranean. The actuator assembly has a first pipe member with a segment formed of a first material. A second pipe member is coaxially aligned with the first pipe member. A plurality of bearings are positioned between the first pipe member and the second pipe member. Each of the plurality of bearings includes a second material. The first material is reactive to the second material. Certain of the plurality of bearings are changeable bearings that include a dissolvable material. The actuator assembly is operable to instruct an operation of the device by generating an instruction signal by rotating the first pipe member relative to the second pipe member and interpreting a pattern of a reaction of the segment as a bearing rotates past the segment.

Abstract: A method for on demand release of a downhole chemical comprising the steps of extending a drillstring into a wellbore of a subterranean well from a terranean surface comprising an actuator assembly and a modified stabilizer; identifying a downhole issue in the wellbore; activating the actuator assembly to transmit a signal to turn on the electromagnet of the modified stabilizer; creating a magnetic field when the electromagnet is turned on by the actuator assembly; opening the magnetically-actuated door due to the magnetically-actuated door being physically attracted to the magnetic field of the electromagnet; releasing downhole chemicals from the chemical storage compartment through the magnetically-actuated door; activating the actuator assembly to transmit a signal to turn off the electromagnet of the modified stabilizer; removing the magnetic field when the electromagnet is turned off by the actuator assembly; and closing the magnetically-actuated door when the magnetic field is removed.

Abstract: An invert emulsion drilling fluids having a combination of fatty acids derived from waste vegetable oil (WVO) and a fatty alcohol as a rheology modifier. An invert emulsion drilling fluid may include a water in oil emulsion, an invert emulsifier, a fatty alcohol having six to thirty carbon atoms, and a fatty acid having six to eighteen carbon atoms. The fatty acid is provided by esterifying a waste vegetable oil to produce a methyl ester of the waste vegetable oil and cleaving an ester group from the methyl ester of the waste vegetable oil. The invert emulsion drilling fluid may be formulated free of organoclay. Methods of drilling a wellbore using an invert emulsion drilling fluid are also provided.

Abstract: One or more embodiments presently described are directed to lubricants and methods for making such lubricants. According to one embodiment, a lubricant suitable for use in a water-based drilling fluid may comprise one or more alkyl esters and a fatty acid blend comprising one or more medium-chain fatty acids. The one or more medium-chain fatty acids may be at least 50 weight percent (wt. %) of the fatty acid blend. The weight ratio of the one or more alkyl esters to the fatty acid blend may be from 1:1 to 3:1.

Abstract: A waste vegetable-oil based emulsifier for use as drilling mud primary emulsifier is described. A first emulsifier is prepared from an alkyl ester of waste vegetable oil. The waste vegetable oil is vegetable oil which has been used for a process prior to preparing the first emulsifier. A quantity of the first emulsifier is added to an oil-based drilling fluid. A quantity of an activating agent is added to the oil-based drilling fluid. The activating agent is configured to activate the emulsifier to stabilize an emulsion. A quantity of viscosifier is added to the oil-based drilling fluid. A quantity of a second emulsifier is added to the oil-based drilling fluid. A quantity of weigh-up material is added to the oil-based drilling fluid. The resulting oil-based drilling fluid is used in a wellbore drilling operation to drill a wellbore in a subterranean zone.
