Disclosed are color filter producing method and apparatus in which while an ink-jet head having a plurality of nozzles arranged in a first direction and a substrate are relatively scanned in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction, the ink-jet head ejects ink onto the substrate, so that filter elements arranged in the first direction have the same color, and filter elements adjacent from each other in the second direction have different colors. Three production conditions, the amount of ink ejected at one time by the nozzles, the number of times of the main scans and the sub-scanning distance, are changed in accordance with the width of each filter element of an obtained color filter. As a result, it is possible to provide a method whereby, even when the type of color filter to be produced is changed, the time required for the preparation accompanying the change can be reduced, and multiple types of color filters can be easily produced at a low cost, and to provide an apparatus therefor.

Disclosed is an apparatus for automatically measuring the amount of ink discharged from an inkjet printhead. A predetermined amount of pure water is injected into a measurement bottle, the bottle is supplied via an insertion port to a rotary table for measurement purposes, and the rotary table is rotated by 90.degree. to bring the bottle to a point immediately underlying a nozzle of the inkjet printhead. Ink is then discharged into the bottle from the printhead under set measurement conditions. The rotary head is then rotated a further 90.degree. to bring the bottle to a point in front of a photometer. At this time the ink solution is stirred thoroughly and the absorbance thereof is measured by the photometer. When measurement is completed, the rotary table is rotated a further 90.degree. to discard the bottle from a discharge port. These steps are automated by computer control.

There are disclosed an apparatus and method for manufacturing a color filter for a liquid crystal display by forming a plurality of color elements on a glass substrate. Three ink-jet heads respectively having R, G, and B color ink are moved relative to the glass substrate, and form color elements by ejecting corresponding color ink onto positions, corresponding to the color elements, on the substrate.
