Abstract:
A waveguide core extends from an input coupler towards a media-facing surface of a read/write head. A cap is located between a terminating end of the waveguide core and the media-facing surface. The cap is formed of a high index of refraction, high-corrosion resistant material that is different than a material used to form the waveguide core. A near-field transducer is proximate the cap in a down-track direction. A head overcoat on the media-facing surface covers the cap.
Abstract:
An apparatus is includes a near field transducer positioned adjacent a media-facing surface and at the end of a waveguide having at least one core layer and a cladding layer. The apparatus also includes at least one optical reflector positioned adjacent opposing cross-track edges of the near field transducer and/or adjacent a down-track side of the near-field transducer.
Abstract:
A waveguide a core extending along a light propagation and a coupling layer adjacent one side of the core along the light propagation direction. A gradient index material is adjacent to at least one side of the coupling layer. The gradient index material has a first refractive index proximate the coupling layer and a second refractive index away from the coupling layer. The gradient index material is configured to direct light from an input facet to the core layer.
Abstract:
A recording head includes a near-field transducer located an oblique angle to a media-facing surface. The near-field transducer includes an enlarged portion and a peg extending from the enlarged portion towards the media-facing surface at a normal angle. An input waveguide of the recording head receives energy from an energy source, and an output waveguide delivers the energy to near-field transducer at the oblique angle. The output waveguide is oriented at the oblique angle. A bent waveguide with a polynomial spiral shape joins the input waveguide and the output waveguide.

Abstract:
An apparatus includes a waveguide extending along a light-propagation direction between a light source and a media-facing surface. An assistant layer is configured to receive light from a light source, the assistant layer has a terminating end with a first taper that narrows toward the media-facing surface. A core layer has a coupling end configured to receive light from the assistant layer, the coupling end having a second taper that widens toward the media-facing surface. A middle cladding layer is disposed between the core layer and the assistant layer. A near field transducer is disposed proximate the media-facing surface and configured to receive the light from the core layer.
Abstract:
A method involves receiving light from a light source at a fundamental transverse electric (TE00) mode or a fundamental transverse magnetic (TM00) mode. A waveguide polarization multiplexes the light to a combined mode that includes the TM00 mode and a first higher-order transverse electric (TE10) mode. A near-field transducer is excited via the light at the combined mode.
Abstract:
An apparatus has an input surface configured to receive energy emitted from an energy source in a first mode. A mode order converter is configured to convert the energy from the first mode to a second mode. The waveguide of the apparatus has an input end disposed proximate the input surface and configured to receive the energy in the first mode. The waveguide has an output end disposed proximate a media-facing surface and configured to deliver energy in the second mode. The output end is at an oblique angle to a cross-track line at an intersection of the media-facing surface and a substrate-parallel plane.
