A surface light source device of side-light type enables concentrated output of illumination light to a frontal direction. A flux having clear directivity is outputted from window portions 1w on an emitting surface 5 of a light guide plate 1 with emitting directivity. This flux is represented by a beam C01 outputted in a direction at an angle of 70.degree.. A flux C02 incident on reflection portions 1r is returned to the light guide plate 1 and is given an opportunity of output from the window portions 1w again. The flux C01 having escaped from the window portions 1w to an air layer AR is obliquely incident on flat regions 14g of a propagation direction characteristics modifier 14, and a degree of parallelization of the flux in a propagation direction is improved. The flux is blocked by the reflection portions 1r from being incident on a notch portion (uneffective area) between the flat regions 14g. After total reflection by a total reflection surface 14b of each projection element 14c, the flux is outputted from a flat outside surface 14h to a frontal direction without degrading the improved degree of parallelization. The projection elements 14c may be two-dimensionally arrayed. A prismatic groove or a cylindrical lens array may be formed on the outside surface 14h to two-dimensionally enhance the degree of parallelization.

The invention is a surface light source device capable of effectively producing polarized illumination light. The output angle of a representative beam C3 representing P-polarized component of output light from an emission surface 5 of the light guide plate 1 is about 75.degree.. Where P-polarization component of representative beam C3 is 100 (reference value), and the S-polarized component is 42.2. Representative beam C3 enters from an air layer AR to a flat surface 24g of a prism sheet 24, and then goes into the inside of prism sheet 24. At this stage the P-polarization component is 89.3 whereas the S-polarization component is 25.5. Beam C3 is incident on a slant surface 24d from its inside at an angle proximating the normal, and propagates into air layer AR between prism sheets 24, 34. A placement portion 130 calculates an initial shape of napped models, which are three-dimensional models of the napped parts, on the basis of a degree of defiberation, minimum radius and height information, and places the napped models having the calculated initial shape in predetermined positions of the base texture model. A flexure energy calculation portion 141 calculates a flexure energy representing the energy of the napped models attempting to flex, on the basis of a yarn stiffness coefficient. A repulsion energy calculation portion 142 calculates a repulsion energy representing the energy between the napped models attempting to repel each other, on the basis of a repulsion coefficient. A final shape calculation portion 143 deforms the shape of the napped models to calculate the final shape of the napped models so that a sum energy obtained by adding up the flexure energy and the repulsion energy becomes minimum.
