    摘要: An apparatus and a method are provided for compensating an aberration occurring in a reflected light beam from a recording medium. The apparatus includes a liquid crystal unit including a first electrode layer having divisional electrodes and a second electrode layer, and a liquid crystal element which provides a light beam with a phase change when an electric field is applied; a detector for receiving the reflected light beam through the liquid crystal unit to generate a detection signal; a voltage generator for generating voltages to be applied to the divisional electrodes; and a controller for performing aberration compensation control by changing the applied voltages to each of the divisional electrodes with reference to an applied reference voltage to a predetermined divisional electrode. The controller determines the applied reference voltage based on an amplitude change of the detection signal when the applied voltages to the divisional electrodes are changed.

The liquid crystal panel included a first area in which a first group of grating patterns with predetermined pitches is formed and a second area in which a second group of grating patterns having the predetermined pitches is formed, and the first group of grating patterns and the second group of grating patterns are arranged on a plane with a gap area formed between the first area and the second area so as to form an integrated grating pattern. The optical pickup further includes a control unit for applying a first voltage to the first area to control a refractive index of the first area and applying a second voltage to the second area to control a refractive index of the second area, thereby to control a diffraction characteristic of the integrated grating pattern.

When the servo light beam traces on one of the tracks neighboring each other, one trace group is composed of the main light beam group on the one of the recording layers, wherein, when the servo light beam traces on the other of the tracks neighboring each other, the other trace group is composed of the main light beam group on the one of the recording layers, wherein an interval between the one trace group and the other trace group is larger than an average trace pitch within the trace group.

In order to reduce the sizes of the optical pickup, light of the second and the third wavelengths is generated by a single dual-wavelength light source, and reflecting light of all the wavelengths is to be received by the single light-detecting element. A hologram element giving different optical effects to light of each wavelength is arranged between the light irradiating means and the light-detecting element. Thus, appropriate information recording and reproduction can be performed by using light of each wavelength.
