Abstract:
A problem checker architecture that monitors user progress during a problem-solving process and assists the user through the process (e.g., when requested) using common human methods of solving the problem. Assistance can be in the form of detecting errors during the process, and providing context-sensitive help information when the user gets stuck or makes a mistake. The problem checker can walk the user through the process of solving a math problem one step at a time allowing the user to learn to solve math problems according to a number of different methods. Rather than simply calculating and displaying the answer, the problem checker allows the user to attempt to solve math problems, providing direction only when asked and correction only when required. The problem checker can recognize multiple solution methods for many common math problems and guide the user to the solution via any of the methods.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a method and apparatus for filling Doppler signal gaps. The method comprises steps of: storing Doppler signals before and after a gap; analyzing spectral characteristics of the Doppler signals to be filled; judging whether the Doppler signals are to be frequency compensated according to the spectral parameters; compensating the Doppler signals; and filling the gap by means of weighting and superposing the frequency compensated Doppler signals to be filled and the original Doppler signals before and after the gap based on the judging result. According to the method of the present invention, the Doppler signals before and after the gap are first subjected to frequency compensation, and then weighted and superposed with the acquired Doppler signals, thus obtaining a continuous spectrogram and audio output and maintaining the original spectral characteristics of the Doppler signal.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method for adjusting forward transmission power control threshold of a terminal in a mobile communication system, including the following steps of setting in advance at a base station side a forward pilot threshold and a lower bound, an upper bound of a forward transmission power control threshold as well as adjustment ranges of said lower bound and upper bound; obtaining the current forward pilot energy measured and reported by the terminal; judging whether the forward pilot energy exceeds said forward pilot threshold; and adjusting the forward transmission power control threshold of the terminal. In the invention, the forward pilot energy reported by the terminal is judged and adjusted through the pre-set parameters above, so as to dynamically adjust the forward transmission power control threshold of the terminal in the sector, reduce call drop rate, and promote the communication quality of a CDMA mobile communication system.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for compressing compound images of the type containing text, graphics and photographic imagery. This method and apparatus offer significant simplicity and computational efficiency by progressing fundamentally through a first processing phase, wherein an original compound image is first separated into (1) a foreground (text and graphics) layer, and (2) a more pixel-complicated background (photographic imagery) layer, all based upon a simple region-growing segmentation algorithm, and then a follow-up phase which involves individual and differentiated compression of the two segmented layers. Simple regional boundary encodation is employed for the foreground layer, and a lifting-scheme-modified ASWT algorithm is employed for the background layer.
Abstract:
A method in a scalable encoder for reducing the average latency associated with randomly accessing an encoded digital video signal is disclosed. This method may include converting a digital video signal into a first layer having a first degree of quality and a second layer having a second degree of quality that is higher than the first degree of quality. The method may also include encoding the first layer at a first intra-frame rate, and encoding the second layer at a second intra-frame rate that is lower than the first intra-frame rate. A method in a scalable decoder for reducing the average latency associated with randomly accessing an encoded digital video signal is also provided. The method includes accessing a first layer of a digital video signal. The first layer includes the digital video signal encoded at a first degree of quality and a first intra-frame rate. The method also includes accessing a second layer of the digital video signal. The second layer includes the digital video signal encoded at a second degree of quality higher than the first degree of quality and a second intra-frame rate lower than the first intra-frame rate.
Abstract:
A method of data compression. A multiple-level wavelet transform transforms image data of an original image. Motion compensation is performed on a low-frequency band of the transformed image data. This band is then inversely transformed and used to reconstruct a portion of the original image. The remaining portions of the original image are then reconstructed from that portion. This image data then becomes the basis of the next level of the wavelet transform and is transformed back into the wavelet domain. This process is repeated until all of the levels of the wavelet transform have been used.
Abstract:
A graphical user interface for a videophone in a cable television system allows the user to access the videophone functionalities with an input control device and a television monitor. The user can place a call, receive a call and store/access/call addresses using a remote in conjunction with the graphical user interface display screens. The videophone has several elements including a user interface, a graphics engine, a network interface, a remote control interface, and an output audio/video line connected to a television monitor. The user interface receives and processes control inputs using a microprocessor and the graphics engine generates the display screens using a DSP. Depending on processing requirements, the DSP may implement the user interface rather than the microprocessor. Also, anti-aliasing fonts are used to generate a high quality display. To save processing cycles, the anti-aliasing fonts may be retrieved from a look-up table rather than being generated in real time. The videophone may be implemented as a plug-in device to a set-top box, a standalone unit, or a standalone unit with a set-top box between the monitor and the videophone unit. When implemented with a set-top box the same remote control unit may be used to control the television and videophone functions.
Abstract:
Method, system, and programs for recommending content to a user. First information related to one or more previous users is first obtained. A model that maps from users to topics of interest is then established based on the first information related to the one or more previous users. Second information related to the current user is also obtained. One or more topics of interest are identified for the current user based on the model. Content is recommended to the current user in accordance with the one or more topics of interest for the current user. Eventually, an updated model is generated by integrating information associated with the current user with the model established based on the first information related to the one or more previous users. The information associated with the current user includes the second information related to the current user.
