There is provided a pixel data writing controller which is arranged to store a first multiple-bit-per-pixel data defining each color of image pixels and a second multiple-bit-per-pixel data defining each color of background pixels. A high performance graphics display system for use as an engineering workstation includes a compact method of generating vectors and transmitting addresses for same from a picture processor to frame buffer control circuitry for writing or reading pixel values along the vector in the frame buffer. The system uses a multiplexed address/data bus. Off-screen memory in communication with the picture processor is used to store pixel data read along vectors in the frame buffer preceding writing a vector so that the original data can be restored when the written vector is moved or removed. Vectors are encoded by the picture processor as a first word containing the address of the beginning point of the vector and major axis and X and Y direction bits to indicate the vector's direction. A second word includes a minor axis bit, indicating whether the next pixel to be written or read is on or off the major axis, in the direction indicated for such axis in the first word. The first word also includes a hesitate bit indicating whether the first pixel of a vector is to be written or read. The system is configured in pipe stages with a FIFO at each stage controlled by a hold signal that is pipelined from downstream stages in a direction opposite the pipelined data flow.

Separate control is provided for two bitplane backgrounds and for eight reusable and easily movable sprites. Additional logic allows for dynamically-controllable interobject priority and collision detection among data in each of the bitplane backgrounds and sprites. A coprocessor provides for video beam-synchronized changes to data in registers, freeing the main processor for general purpose computing tasks. A block image transferer is provided to rapidly copy data in large blocks from one memory location to another. In hold-and-modify mode, color output circuitry holds the values for a previously displayed pixel while bitplane data modifies those values, allowing for simultaneous display of a greatly increased number of colors.

Electronic generation of the display is accomplished by a system which includes a host computer, a plurality of object generators, and related circuitry. Each object generator contains a memory which stores the image of an object which may be displayed on the video display. The host computer assigns locations in the scene to the objects of each object generator. Each object generator includes its own microprocessor which performs calculations based on its own object information and position and range information received from the host computer to provide appropriate video signals for the display. The related circuitry of the system includes a blanking and count generator which provides signals whereby the color video information from the object generator is displayed on the video display and it also establishes times for permitting updating of the information between the host computer and the object generators. Further features include a priority chain linking the object generators which, if an overlap situation occurs where more than one object generator is calling for its information to be displayed in the same location on the video display, the object which has been assigned a higher priority, indicating that it is at a closer range than others, has its overlap information displayed on the video display instead of those of lower priority. Another feature is the data compression scheme employed to store the object image in each object generator.
