A high-frequency transformer, comprises: a ring core made of amorphous magnetic material; a core protection box made of conductive material and enclosing the ring core; and a high-voltage winding, consisting of enamel-insulated wire wound on the core protection box. Wherein, on the ring top wall of the core protection box there is a ring gap in the peripheral direction, and at inner fringe and outer fringe of the ring gap, a plurality of leading wires are respectively arranged in the peripheral direction. The leading wires at inner fringe and outer fringe of the ring gap are electrically-connected together respectively and form two terminals. The core protection box and the two terminals constitute low-voltage winding of the high-frequency transformer. If the low-voltage winding comprises two or more core protection boxes, it can have a central tap or have multi-turn. A thus fabricated high-frequency transformer has a smaller size, a lighter weight and is more apt to industrial batch manufacture. Further, the magnetic coupling between the high-voltage winding and the low-voltage winding can be increased.

High quality factor (Q) spiral and toroidal inductor and transformer are disclosed that are compatible with silicon very large scale integration (VLSI) processing, consume a small IC area, and operate at high frequencies. The spiral inductor has a spiral metal coil deposited in a trench formed in a dielectric layer over a substrate. The metal coil is enclosed in ferromagnetic liner and cap layers, and is connected to an underpass contact through a metal filled via in the dielectric layer. The spiral inductor also includes ferromagnetic cores lines surrounded by the metal spiral coil. A spiral transformer is formed by vertically stacking two spiral inductors, or placing them side-by-side over a ferromagnetic bridge formed below the metal coils and cores lines. The toroidal inductor includes a toroidal metal coil with a core having ferromagnetic strips. The toroidal metal coil is segmented into two coils each having a pair of ports to form a toroidal transformer.

A transformer can be constructed by first following the steps to create an inductor. A second winding is then created in a similar manner as the first winding.

Secondary winding configurations and methods particularly applicable for toroid transformers are described for winding secondary windings over the indexed primary winding and toroidal core. The secondary winding is formed in the configuration of a multifilar winding of a plurality of coplanar parallel filaments with a first elongate strip of electrically insulating material bonded to the filaments on one side and a second elongate strip of electrically insulating material bonded to the filaments on the other side and to the first elongate strip. The resulting electrically insulated multifilar strap winding contains the filaments in substantially parallel coplanar relationship. The multifilar strap winding is wound around the toroidal core in substantially equally spaced turns. The strap winding maintains the filaments substantially in equally spaced relationship relative to each other over irregular surfaces and compound curvature of the toroidal core without crossover. Mutual inductance between the secondary winding of the invention and the primary winding is optimized while leakage inductance is minimized. The disclosure is applicable for high frequency switching transformers used in the power supplies of microprocessors and computer accessories where losses and spikes from leakage reactance must be minimized.

The preferred low voltage and high voltage coils are each continuous in substantial part over their length and form an arcuate elongated passage therethrough. The conductive clip described includes integral pins for making connection to printed circuit wiring on a printed circuit board. The turns ratio is selected by the pattern of printed circuit interconnection of the conductive clips such that the transformer structure turns ratio is established by the associated printed circuit interconnection pattern.
