Abstract: A helmet includes a shell having an interior surface, a padding disposed along the interior surface of the shell, and a chinbar. The padding defines a first engagement surface positioned at a first lateral side of the padding and a second engagement surface positioned at an opposing second lateral side of the padding. The chinbar includes a cage, a first flange, and a second flange. The cage includes a first end defining a third engagement surface and a second end defining a fourth engagement surface. The third engagement surface interfaces with the first engagement surface and the fourth engagement surface interfaces with the second engagement surface. The first flange extends from the first end of the cage. The second flange extends from the second end of the cage. The first flange and the second flange of the chinbar are embedded within the padding.

Abstract: In a method for adapting a thermally deformable item of clothing to a body part, the item is at least partially heated and brought into contact with an abutment region and the appropriate body part. The item of clothing has a side which, in the use position, is directed towards the body and a side which, in the use position, is directed away from the body. At least one pressure-exerting unit subjects that side of the item of clothing which is directed away from the body, at least in part, to a shaping pressure such that the at least partially heated item of clothing is adapted, at least in part, to the shape of the part of the body. The item of clothing is at least partially cooled by a cooling unit such that it is stabilized in the shape adapted to the part of the body.

Abstract: A method of creating a design on complex curves and irregular contours of a protective helmet, quickly and without having to first disassemble the helmet. A design is transferred to a clear film/acetate, which is then exposed onto a photoresist mask, transferring the design to the photoresist mask. The mask is washed out creating blast-able areas in the design mask. The mask is adhered to an area of the helmet, which is otherwise covered with a sealed protective bag. Sandblasting/abrasive-blasting etches portions of the helmet surface through the blast-able area of the mask. Various colors or other special effects may be painted/applied onto the etched portions of the helmet surface. The protective bag and photoresist mask can be removed, and the painted areas buffed/polished in a final step.

Abstract: A helmet comprising one or more additively-manufactured components designed to enhance performance and use of the helmet, such as: impact protection, including for managing different types of impacts; fit and comfort; adjustability; and/or other aspects of the helmet. Methods of additively-manufacturing components for such helmets are also provided, including methods involving expandable materials and the expansion of post-additively manufactured expandable components.
