Abstract: Thermoformed polymeric foam articles and methods of forming the same are described. In some embodiments, thermoformed articles are produced from multi-layer foamed sheet where the formed article has a density equal to or less than the precursor multi-layer sheet. One of the layers of the thermoformed article may be a polymer foam layer having a density reduction between 5% and 50% as compared to the solid polymer. Such polymer foam layers can be referred to as “medium density” or “high density” foams. Advantageously, the methods described herein are practical for commercial use and, for example, can be used to produce a variety of thermoformed articles suitable for use in many different applications.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides a microstructured article (830, 930) including a thermoplastic polymer shaped to have a curve. At least a portion of the curve includes a microstructured surface (1010B, 10, 1110A, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 810, 840, 910, 940) of utilitarian discontinuities and the microstructured surface (101B, 10, 1110A, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 810, 840, 910, 940) includes peak structures and adjacent valleys (810, 910). The peak structures and the curve are formed of a single piece of the thermoplastic polymer. A method of making the microstructured articles is also provided including a) obtaining a tool (820, 920) shaped to include at least one of a protrusion or a concavity; b) disposing a microstructured film (800A, 800C, 900) on at least a portion of the tool (820, 920) including the protrusion and/or the concavity; and c) thermoforming a single piece of thermoplastic polymer onto the tool (820, 920) to form a microstructured article (830, 930) shaped to include a curve. The curve is an inverse of the protrusion or the concavity of the tool (820, 920).

Abstract: A chaff resistant and economically recyclable dunnage tray is disclosed. In one aspect, the dunnage tray includes a base portion formed from a first material and a top portion formed from a second material. The top portion is secured to the base portion, and defines at least one cavity or recess for supporting a machine component. The first and second materials are high density polyethylene (HDPE) materials with the second material including polyethylene elastomers, or plastomers. In one example, the dunnage tray is formed by thermoforming a co-extruded sheet including a first layer corresponding to the bottom structural portion and a second layer corresponding to the elastomer or plastomer portion. In one example, the dunnage tray is formed by thermoforming an extruded sheet to form the base portion and by attaching separately formed top portions with polyethylene elastomers, or plastomers to the thermoformed base portion. This invention provides solutions to chaffing or chipping of polyethylene dunnage trays, control of coefficient of friction and softness to minimize parts from sliding/abrading dunnage surfaces, and eliminates requirements for disassembly of dunnage trays and separation of materials prior to recycling.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for functionalizing a workpiece surface, comprising the following steps: a) providing a workpiece; b) providing a film; c) functionalizing at least one film side by the location-selective application of a functionalization composition comprising a polymer material onto part of the film side in one or more layers by means of a 3D printing process; d) creating an integrally bonded or interlocking connection between the workpiece surface and the film functionalized in step c) by bringing the film into contact with at least part of the workpiece surface, wherein the integrally bonded or interlocking connection to the workpiece surface is achieved with a functionalized film side. The invention further relates to workpieces having a surface functionalized according to the invention.

Abstract: Methods of forming dental appliances. The methods may include partially curing a prepolymer mixture in a first mold to form a partially cured polymer mixture. The first mold may have an internal cavity that is shaped to provide the partially cured polymer mixture with a first shape having a channel in accordance with a dental arch. The first shape may have a greater thickness at locations corresponding to where a gingival line of the dental appliance will be formed compared to a thickness at occlusal surfaces of the dental appliance. The methods may include modifying the first shape of the partially cured polymer mixture to form a shell having cavities shaped to receive teeth. The methods may also include fully curing the shell by exposing the partially cured polymer mixture to energy until the partially cured polymer mixture thermosets.

Abstract: Films and articles are described comprising a microstructured surface having an array of peak structures and adjacent valleys. For improved cleanability, the valleys preferably have a maximum width ranging from 10 microns to 250 microns and the peak structures have a side wall angle greater than 10 degrees. The peak structures may comprise two or more facets such as in the case of a linear array of prisms or an array of cube-corners elements. The facets form continuous or semi-continuous surfaces in the same direction. The valleys typically lack intersecting walls. Also described are methods of making and methods of use. The microstructured surface of the article can be prepared by various microreplication techniques such as coating, injection molding, embossing, laser etching, extrusion, casting and curing a polymerizable resin; and bonding microstructured film to a surface or article with an adhesive.

Abstract: A method for manufacturing a thermoplastic container may include locally heating a middle zone of a thermoplastic tube; gripping the tube on either side by using retaining members; pulling the tube apart, causing a middle zone to narrow; pushing the inner wall of the middle zone against each other to obtain a closure; and cutting through the closed-off middle zone to obtain two separate tubular parts. Further is provided a system for pulling apart a tube, the system may include a first retaining member which is provided for insertion into the first zone via the first end and a second retaining member provided for insertion into the second zone via the second end, each retaining member being adjustable between a first position in which the retaining member fits inside the tube and a second position in which, in use, the retaining member exerts a pressure on the inner wall of the tube.
