The instrument includes at least one sensor to measure at least one parameter associated with the instrument, at least one processor, and a memory operatively associated with the processor. The memory includes machine executable instructions that when executed by the processor cause the processor to monitor the at least one sensor over a predetermined time period and determine a rate of change of the measured parameter.

Abstract: A microsurgical device and methods of its use can be used for treatment of various conditions including eye diseases, such as glaucoma, using minimally invasive surgical techniques. A dual-blade device can be used for cutting the trabecular meshwork (“TM”) in the eye. The device tip provides entry into the Schlemm's canal via its size (i.e., for example, 0.2-0.3 mm width) and configuration where a ramp elevates the TM away from the outer wall of the Schlemm's canal and guides the TM to first and second lateral elements for creating first and second incisions through the TM. The dimensions and configuration of the blade is such that an entire strip of TM is removed without leaving TM leaflets behind and without causing collateral damage to adjacent tissues.

A motor is supported within the housing for supplying actuation motions to various portions of a surgical end effector coupled to the housing. The housing may include a contact arrangement that is configured to permit power to be supplied to the motor only when the housing is operably attached to the actuator arrangement.

Abstract: A surgical instrument configured to be coupled to a robotic surgical system is disclosed. The surgical instrument comprises an end effector, a threaded drive shaft, a firing member drivable by the threaded drive shaft, a closure system configured to move a iaw of the end effector toward a closed position, and a housing assembly coupleable with the robotic surgical system and comprising an array of electrical contacts. The surgical instrument further comprises a first motor configured to drive the closure system, a second motor configured to drive the threaded drive shaft, a first decoupleable electrical contact configured to supply power to the first motor from a power system, and a second decoupleable electrical contact configured to supply power to the second motor from the power system. The power system is selectively interrupted unless a signal is provided to the power system from the robotic surgical system.

Abstract: A device and method is provided to gain access to interior body regions. The system includes a safety needle, a stylet assembly, a blade assembly, an obturator assembly, a cannula assembly, a handle assembly, an actuator assembly, and a lock assembly. The safety needle accesses an interior body region. The actuator assembly, lock assembly, and handle assembly interact to expose the blade assembly, after which the blade assembly expands the pathway created by the safety needle. The obturator then further expands the pathway and delivers the cannula assembly to the desired location. The safety needle, obturator assembly, blade assembly, handle assembly, actuator assembly, and lock assembly are removed, leaving the cannula assembly in place for future procedures.
