Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for preparing a simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal lightweight material and the use thereof, and belongs to the technical field of environmental functional materials and sewage treatment. In the present invention, sulfur and an iron-based component are thoroughly melted and dispersed to obtain a molten mixture, where the iron-based component is a mixture of iron sulfides with carbonates of calcium and magnesium; and the above molten mixture is subjected to a foaming treatment to form the simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal lightweight material. The simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal lightweight material of the present invention has characteristics of high porosity, a large specific surface area, a light weight, and a high reaction activity. The resultant lightweight material, used as a microbial carrier and an electron donor for a biochemical reaction, is applied to a reactor such as a fixed bed or fluidized bed for sewage treatment, with the advantages of a good microbial attachment performance, a high denitrification rate and a good phosphorus removal effect.

Abstract: Methods to remediate a contaminated material are provided. In one embodiment, a biocatalyst that digests hydrocarbon contaminants is activated with a nutrient and the activated biocatalyst is combined with the contaminated material and water to form a mixture. The mixture is incubated for a period of time, and the level of contaminant in the mixture is determined to ascertain whether to incubate further, add additional biocatalyst mix, or provide the remediated material for further processing. In one embodiment, the remediated material is provided for reuse or recycling with a second material, such as a construction aggregate. The method is particularly suited for remediation of drill cuttings, mine tailings, hydrocarbon-contaminated soil, and the like.

Abstract: Ion exchange resin macroporous beads for the highly selective extraction of univalent anions from aqueous solutions. A specific example is the removal of dicyanoaurate and dicyanoargentate from cyanide leach solutions and tailings. The beads have a maximum number of ligands specific for the desired univalent anion, while maintaining sufficient separation to minimize binding of polyvalent ions. The beads are prepared using a functionalized monomer with the use of a specifically tuned coordinator. The beads can be used as a sensor for detecting the amount of anions captured when interrogated by an appropriate light source.

In the method, a mixed aluminum (III) and iron (II) salt solution is added to water containing one or more contaminants that is in contact with a zero-valent iron media that comprises (a) a reactive solid comprising zero-valent iron and one or more iron oxide minerals in contact therewith and (b) magnetite to provide an aqueous reaction medium. The aqueous reaction medium is contacted with the zero-valent iron media for a period of time sufficient to reduce the concentration of one or more of the contaminants.

Abstract: A method for the decontamination of water containing one or more PFAS contaminants includes injecting a gas through a diffuser and into the water so as to form a plurality of bubbles in the water, the one or more PFAS contaminants accumulating on the plurality of bubbles. The plurality of bubbles is allowed to rise, forming a foam at the surface of the water. The resulting foam is then collected and transported away from the surface of the water, where it condenses into a liquid and can be treated and/or disposed of.
