    摘要: Methods of making gradient property refractive elements such as gradient index lens blanks. The spatial distributions of constituents achieved by subjecting various starting assemblages to various diffusion conditions are predicted. Each such predicted spatial distribution of constituents is converted to a spatial distribution of the graded property. The property distribution which best approximates a desired distribution is selected, to thereby select one starting assemblage and one set of diffusion conditions. That assemblage and set of conditions are used in fabrication of the element.

    摘要: A method of manufacturing glass bodies, in which the starting material for the glass body, being an extrusion mass consisting of microdispersed SiO.sub.2 particles, a binder and a dispersing liquid, is used to form a porous green body by extrusion, which is subsequently dried, purified and sintered, the extrusion mass, which is shaped by the nozzle of an extruder, being extruded into a transfer vessel in which the extruded body is tempered towards the gelification point of the binder present in the extrusion mass, a liquid being contained in the transfer vessel, which cannot or substantially not be mixed with the dispersing liquid present in the extrusion mass, and which cannot be mixed with the binder present in the extrusion mass; and an arrangement for carrying out this method.

    摘要: Anamorphic lenses or lens arrays are formed in photosensitively crystallizable glass by selective exposure of the glass surface and thermal treatment to cause the crystallization of the glass surrounding the lenses. The lenses, which have elongated cross-sections in the plane of the exposed glass surface and raised curved surfaces resulting from the densification of the surround material, exhibit different surface curvatures over their major and minor transverse axes and thus anamorphic light-focusing properties.

    摘要: The invention provides a novel method for manufacturing fused quartz glass by the decomposition and oxidation of a vaporizable silicon compound such as silicon tetrachloride in a plasma flame according to which the quartz glass rod produced contains a controlled amount of hydroxy groups with high reproducibility. The principle of the inventive method consists in the admixture of gaseous hydrogen chloride into the gaseous reactant mixture or in the plasma-supporting gas as the source for the hydrogen atoms to be converted to the hydroxy groups in place of hydrogen gas or water vapor as the hydrogen source. Good proportionality is established between the concentration of the hydrogen chloride in the gaseous feed and the hydroxy content in the resultant fused quartz glass rod.
