    Abstract: In general, sound resonators or mufflers are bulky self-contained metal bodies, which are expensive to produce and to install in an engine intake or exhaust system. A relatively simple substitute, which can be tailor made to attenuate sound at various frequencies include two arcuate casing sections which are interconnected along one side edge by a hinge, so that the sections can be wrapped around an engine air intake tube, a latch on the other side edges of the sections for securing the sections together to form a sleeve around and coaxial with the tube, an inlet nozzle on the interior of each section for extending into the tube, and partitions extending between the inner and outer surfaces of each section for defining elongated, tortuous, sound attenuating passages.

    Abstract: A muffler is provided including a pair of internal plates formed to define an array of tubes. At least one external shell is formed to define at least one chamber which will surround and enclose a selected portion of the array of tubes. Selected portions of certain tubes will be formed to include perforations. Portions of certain tubes will further undergo cross-sectional changes to control the flow of exhaust gases through the muffler. Certain channels between adjacent chambers of the external shell will be disposed to extend substantially continuously from peripheral portions of the adjacent chambers formed in the external shell. In certain embodiments, a controlled communication is provided between a low frequency resonating chamber and an adjacent expansion chamber. In other embodiments, additional formed layers are provided to enhance either heat or noise insulation.

    Abstract: A tuneable exhaust pipe for an internal combustion engine having a baffle slidable longitudinally within the exhaust pipe at the upstream end a plug in the downstream end. The baffle and plug each have an opening for passage of exhaust gasses therethrough. The baffle defines a resonate chamber on each side of it. The chambers avoid turbulence and maintain the shock wave in the gasses so that the chambers cause an additive dynamic relationship calculated to cause a supercharging effect on the engine by increasing the internal pressures therein.

    Abstract: An adapter for isolating vibration and thermal shock incident to the use of water cooled manifolds attached to internal combustion engines comprises a substantially annular resilient flange conformed to receive the water cooling jacket of a manifold in one side thereof and adapted for attachment at the other side to the exhaust ports of an internal combustion engine. The water jacket around the manifold is provided with a sealing peripheral bead which opposes the compression of the hose clamp surrounding the annulus of the adapter. The adapter, furthermore, includes an attachment flange enclosing on the interior thereof an annular stiffener plate through which attachment may be made to the engine. The internal combustion engine includes water cooling cavities around the exhaust ports thereof and contacting surfaces of the adapter are thus constantly cooled, allowing for the use of low temperature materials like neoprene or the like.

    Abstract: A muffler for a motor vehicle is made up of a housing enclosing a pair of sheet metal plates impressed with semi-circular depressions with the plates combining to form a sinuously shaped gas duct of circular cross section. Walls positioned within the housing divide its interior into chambers. Perforations in the gas duct open into the chambers. Lugs are punched out of the sheet metal plates in a uniform pattern and the lugs in one plate are inserted through the corresponding punched openings in the other and are bent into locking engagement with the other plate. These lugs and the corresponding openings contribute to the mechanical strength of the muffler. The ends of the plates forming the inlet and outlet ends for the gas duct have flanges which also contribute to the mechanical strength of the muffler. Cooperating interfitting corrugations in the plates located at specific positions relative to the gas duct prevent partial short circuiting of the exhaust gas flow through the muffler.
