The invention provides a polymerizable composition comprising: a binder polymer containing at least an acid group having an acid dissociation constant (pKa) of 5.5 or more and a radical addition polymerizable group, and a radical-generating compound capable of generating a radical with light or heat. Further, the invention provides a negative-working planographic printing plate precursor which has a recording layer containing the polymerizable composition. The present invention provides an initiator system including an infrared-absorbing compound that exhibits an electronic transition band in the near-infrared region, an initiator, and a metallocene compound. Upon exposure to infrared radiation, the initiator system is capable of producing radicals sufficient to initiate a photopolymerization reaction. Suitable infrared-absorbing compounds include indocyanine dyes, for example. Trihalomethyl triazine compounds and onium compounds are suitable initiators. Suitable metallocene compounds include ferrocenes and titanocenes. The present invention also provides an infrared-sensitive composition including an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable component, an infrared-absorbing compound that exhibits an electronic transition band in the near-infrared region, an initiator, and a metallocene compound. The infrared-sensitive composition provides improved photospeed and sensitivity in some embodiments. A printing plate precursor including an infrared-sensitive coating is also provided. The printing plate precursor exhibits enhanced shelf life in some embodiments. A method of making a printing plate precursor and a method for making a printable lithographic printing plate are further provided by the invention.

The plate comprises on a substrate a thermosensitive layer comprising an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, a free radical initiator, and an infrared absorbing dye. The plate can be imagewise exposed with an infrared laser to cause hardening in the exposed areas and then developed with a non-alkaline aqueous developer to remove the non-exposed areas. The non-alkaline aqueous developer can be water or an aqueous solution comprising at least 60% of water and having a pH of 2.0 to 10.0.

A method for preparation of a lithographic printing plate, which comprises the steps of: imagewise recording on a lithographic printing plate precursor comprising a support having a hydrophilic surface and a thermosensitive layer, the thermosensitive layer comprising at least one of polymer particles and a microcapsule encapsulating an oleophilic compound therein; and rubbing the printing plate precursor by a rubbing member in the presence of a processing liquid to remove the thermosensitive layer of non-image portions.
