Abstract: A non-aqueous route and process for preparation of boron nitride utilizing aerosol assisted vapor phase synthesis (AAVS) wherein boron precursors are nitrided in one or two heating steps, and wherein a boron oxide nitride carbide intermediary composition is formed after the first heating step and may be further nitrided to form resultant spheroidal boron nitride powders including dense or hollow spheroidal particles that are smooth, bladed, dense or hollow, have protruding whiskers, and are of turbostratic or hexagonal crystalline structure, specifically wherein the boron precursor is dissolved in a non-aqueous solution prior to aerosolization.

Abstract: A nonlinear transmission system comprising a polarization maintaining (PM) fiber and a polarizer, based on the extreme sensitivity of the state of polarization of transmitted light on various parameters, such as the temperature, the optical power input to the fiber. Passive stabilization is achieved by simply terminating the PM fiber by a polarizer at a selected angle. Active stabilization of the optical length of the PM fiber is achieved by feeding back the transmitted into the control of optical power sent through the fiber.

Abstract: High surface area, high entropy oxides comprising multiple metal cations in a single-phase fluorite lattice material enables intrinsic catalytic activity without platinum group metals, tunable oxygen storage capacity, and thermal stability. These properties can be obtained through a facile sol-gel synthesis to provide a low-temperature route for production of phase-pure multi-cationic oxides. The resulting materials achieved significantly higher surface area and catalytic performance, taking advantage of all the properties endowed by the various cations in the composition.

Abstract: The present invention provides one or more injection-lockable whistle-geometry semiconductor ring lasers, which may be cascaded, that are integrated on a common silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrate with a single-frequency semiconductor master laser, wherein the light output from the semiconductor master laser is used to injection-lock the first of the semiconductor ring lasers. The ring lasers can be operated in strongly injection-locked mode, while at least one of them is subjected to direct injection current modulation.

Abstract: A method comprises providing a substrate comprising an n-type Al/In/GaN semiconductor material. A surface of the substrate is dry-etched to form a trench therein and cause dry-etch damage to remain on the surface. The surface of the substrate is immersed in an electrolyte solution and illuminated with above bandgap light having a wavelength that generates electron-hole pairs in the n-type Al/In/GaN semiconductor material, thereby photoelectrochemically etching the surface to remove at least a portion of the dry-etch damage.

Abstract: A variety of application can use nuclear magnetic resonance as an investigative tool. Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements can be conducted using a nuclear magnetic resonance microscope. An example nuclear magnetic resonance microscope can comprise a film embedded in a coverslip, where the film is doped with reactive centers that undergo stable fluorescence when illuminated by electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength within a range of wavelengths and a magnetic field generator to provide a magnetic field for nuclear magnetic resonance measurement of analytes when disposed proximal to the film. Microwave striplines on the coverslip can be arranged to generate microwave fields to irradiate the analytes for the nuclear magnetic resonance measurement. Control of the microwave signals on the microwave striplines can be used for dynamic nuclear polarization in the nuclear magnetic resonance measurement of analytes.
