Methods and systems relating to topics in space-polarization modulated communications. The topics include: adaptive space-polarization modulated communications using channel state information at the transmitter; adaptive decision boundaries at the receiver; carrier frequency offset estimation for multi-carrier modulation schemes; transmission of analog images using polarization and coherence dispersion information; and reduction of peak-to-average power ratio in multi-carrier modulation schemes.
Abstract:
Novel human interleukin-2 (IL-2) muteins or variants thereof are provided. In particular, provided are IL-2 muteins that have an increased binding capacity for IL-2RP receptor and a decreased binding capacity for IL-2Rγc receptor, as compared to wild-type IL-2. Such IL-2 muteins are useful, for example, as IL-2 partial agonist and antagonists in applications where reduction or inhibition of one or more IL-2 and/or IL-15 functions is useful (e.g., in the treatment of graft versus host disease (GVHD) and adult T cell leukemia). Also provided are nucleic acids encoding such IL-2 muteins, methods of making such IL-2 muteins, pharmaceutical compositions that include such IL-2 muteins and methods of treatment using such pharmaceutical compositions.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method and kit for detecting bacteria in a sample. Substrate having a surface comprising an interdigitated Au electrode array and a plurality of siderophores specific to the bacteria and covalently attached to the surface. In one embodiment, the siderophore may contain a free OH (alcohol), amine, or carboxylic acid to which linker may be attached via ester (on the OH), amide (on the amine) or reverse the ester or amide using the siderophore carboxyl. The linker chain can then be short or long with and without heteroatom substitution to improve solubility as needed. The linker can terminate with a thiol which will react with a gold surface. Alternatively, the linker can terminate with another alcohol, amine or acid which can then be attached to corresponding functionality on the surface of choice.
Abstract:
An apparatus for dilating an upper esophageal sphincter. The apparatus includes an elongated expandable member having a cross-section shaped to support a natural shape of an upper esophageal sphincter. A catheter extends from the elongated inflatable member.
Abstract:
This invention relates to novel molecular constructs that act as various logic elements, i.e. gates and flip-flops. The constructs are useful in a wide variety of contexts including, but not limited to, computation and control systems. The basic functional unit of the construct comprises a nucleic acid having at least two protein binding sites that cannot be simultaneously occupied by their cognate binding protein. This basic unit can be assembled in number of formats providing molecular constructs that act like traditional digital logic elements (flip-flops, gates, inverters, etc.).
Abstract:
A novel proton exchange membrane fuel cell with nanostructured components with higher precious metal utilization rate at the electrodes, higher power density, and lower cost. Aligned arrays of carbon nanotubes, either single wall or multiwall, are prepared by catalyzed chemical vapor deposition (CVD), or plasma assisted CVD and used as support for catalyst. Solubilized perfluorosulfonate ionomer membrane is incorporated into the spare space between nanotubes to form a 4-phase boundary of gas, metal, proton conductor, and electron conductor. By assembling the as-prepared electrodes with perfluorosulfonate ionomer membrane, backing layers and electron collectors, proton exchange membrane fuel cells are developed.
Abstract:
A method and a suite of filters for detecting carotid artery calcification in a panoramic dental radiograph, including imposing a filter between an x-ray radiation beam source and an imaging medium, wherein the imposing attenuates the effect of the incident x-ray in the region of the carotid artery; obtaining a panoramic dental radiograph while imposing the filter, wherein the imposing enhances the contrast of the radiograph in the region of carotid artery; and detecting a calcification region in the area of the radiograph wherein the x-ray image's contrast has been enhanced by using the filter, and which area corresponds with the location of the carotid artery. The suite of filters include a patient format, a cassette format, an x-ray unit format and a software-based format.
