Abstract: A polymer matrix composite comprising a porous polymeric network; and a plurality of at least one of polar solvent soluble particles or polar solvent swellable particles distributed within the polymeric network structure; wherein the polymeric network structure is insoluble relative to the soluble particles, wherein the soluble particles are present in a range from 1 to 99 weight percent, based on the total weight of the at least one of soluble particles or swellable particles and the polymer (excluding any solvent); and wherein the polymer matrix composite has particles that at least one of (a) upon exposure to a polar fluid, release at least some component from the polymer matrix composite layer or (b) upon exposure to a polar fluid, absorb some of the polar fluid; and methods for making the same. The polymer matrix composites are useful, for example, in delivery devices comprising the polymer matrix composite, wherein the at least one of soluble particles or swellable particles comprise at least one of an active agent or a released agent.

The polymer matrix composites are useful, for example, as fillers, thermally initiated fuses, and fire stop devices.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides methods for forming asymmetric membranes. More specifically, methods are provided for applying a polymerizable species to a porous substrate for forming a coated porous substrate. The coated porous substrate is exposed to an ultraviolet radiation source having a peak emission wavelength less than 340 nm to polymerize the polymerizable species forming a polymerized material retained within the porous substrate so that the concentration of polymerized material is greater at the first major surface than at the second major surface.

In another embodiment, a film is described comprising a mixture comprising semicrystalline polylactic acid polymer, polymer having a midpoint Tg as measured by differential scanning calorimetry of at least 25° C., and plasticizer; wherein the mixture exhibits a single midpoint Tg and the single midpoint Tg ranges from 40° C. to 65° C.; and wherein the film is oriented and the oriented film exhibits a higher midpoint Tg ranging from 40° C. to 65° C. and a lower midpoint Tg ranging from 5 to 25° C.
