Abstract: Method of making a polymer matrix composite comprising a porous polymeric network structure; and a plurality of particles distributed within the polymeric network structure, the method comprising: combining a thermoplastic polymer, a solvent that the thermoplastic polymer is soluble in, and a plurality of particles to provide a slurry; forming the slurry in to an article; heating the article in an environment to retain at least 90 percent by weight of the solvent, based on the weight of the solvent in the slurry, and inducing phase separation of the thermoplastic polymer from the solvent to provide the polymer matrix composite.

Abstract: A polymer matrix composite comprising a porous polymeric network; and a plurality of dielectric particles distributed within the polymeric network structure; wherein the dielectric particles are present in a range from 5 to 98 weight percent, based on the total weight of the dielectric particles and the polymer (excluding the solvent); and wherein the polymer matrix composite has a dielectric constant in a range from 1.05 to 80; and methods for making the same. Polymer matrix composites comprising dielectric particles are useful, for example, as electric field insulators.

Abstract: Provided are methods and related compositions for separating immiscible organic and aqueous compositions. The methods include dispersing a discrete, insoluble filler in the organic composition, dispersing the organic composition into the aqueous composition, separating under gravity the organic and aqueous compositions into respective upper and lower layers. Advantageously, the insoluble filler remains in the organic composition and facilitates segregation and coalescence of droplets of the organic composition in the aqueous composition.

Abstract: Tetrablock copolymers of formula ABAC are provided that can be used to form porous articles such as porous hollow fibers and porous membranes. Each A block is formed from a vinyl aromatic monomer, the B block is formed from a conjugated diene monomer, and the C block is formed from at least two different oxirane (i.e., epoxy) compounds. The tetrablock copolymers can advantageously be prepared without the use of functional initiators and/or difunctional initiators. The tetrablock copolymers are well suited for solvent induced phase separation (SIPS) processing to prepare porous articles. Membranes formed from the tetrablock copolymers can be used for water treatment and biopharmaceutical purification and/or separation processes.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides an article including an isoporous membrane disposed on a porous substrate. The iso-porous membrane includes a triblock copolymer or a pentablock copolymer. The isoporous membrane has a thickness and is isoporous throughout its thickness. A method of making an article is also provided, which does not require a solvent exchange process. The method includes depositing a composition on a porous substrate, thereby forming a fdm, and removing at least a portion of the solvent from the film, thereby forming an isoporous membrane having numerous pores. The composition contains a solvent and solids including a triblock copolymer or a pentablock copolymer. The article advantageously can be hydrophilic and provides sharp molecular weight cut-offs and high flux.
