The present invention provides an isolated polypeptide (escapin), and fragments thereof, from the sea hare Aplysia californica that have antimicrobial action directed against fungi, yeast, bacteria, and cyanobacteria. Further, the present invention provides an isolated nucleic acid, and fragments thereof, that encode the polypeptide and fragments thereof. Also provided are primers for detecting the nucleic acids of the present invention. A method of inhibiting microbial growth and inhibiting biofilm formation on a surface is also provided.

A high data rate free space communication link operating at millimeter wave frequency ranges. A quasi-optical grid amplifier is used provide increased transmitter output power. In preferred embodiments that output power is greater than 1 watt. Links include two transceivers, the first transceiver transmitting at a first frequency range and receiving at a second frequency range and a second transceiver transmitting at the second frequency range and receiving at the first frequency range. Each of the two transceivers has a primary tunable oscillator providing a basic frequency signal that is precisely the same for both transceivers. Preferably the primary tunable oscillator in one of the transceivers, the slave oscillator, is slaved to the primary tunable oscillator, the master oscillator, in the other transceiver and the two transceivers are locked in frequency and phase.

A wireless cellular communication system in which groups of cellular base stations communicate with a central office via a narrow-band millimeter wave trunk line. The transceivers are equipped with antennas providing beam divergence small enough to ensure efficient spatial and directional partitioning of the data channels so that an almost unlimited number of transceivers will be able to simultaneously use the same millimeter wave spectrum. In a preferred embodiment the trunk line communication link operates within the 92 to 95 GHz portion of the millimeter spectrum. A large number of base stations are each allocated a few MHz portion of a 900 MHz bandwidth of the millimeter wave trunk line. A first transceiver transmits at a first bandwidth and receives at a second bandwidth both within the above spectral range. A second transceiver transmits at the second bandwidth and receives at the first bandwidth. Antennas are described to maintain beam directional stability to less than one-half the half-power beam width. In a preferred embodiment the first and second spectral ranges are 92.3-93.2 GHz and 94.1-95.0 GHz and the half power beam width is about 0.36 degrees or less. Thus, in this system the low frequency band width is efficiently utilized over and over again by dividing a territory into small cells and using low power antenna. And a higher frequency bandwidth is efficiently utilized over and over again by using transmitting antennae that are designed to produce very narrow beams directed at receiving antennae. In a preferred embodiment cellular base stations are prepackaged for easy quick installation at convenient locations such as the tops of commercial buildings.

A system and method for monitoring vital signs and capturing data from a patient remotely using radiotelemetry techniques. The system is characterized by a cordless, disposable sensor band with sensors form measuring full waveform ECG, full waveform respiration, skin temperature, and motion, and transmission circuitry for the detection and transmission of vital signs data of the patient. A small signal transfer unit that can either be worn by the patient, e.g., on his or her belt, or positioned nearby receives data from the sensor band, which it then forwards by e.g., radio transmission to a base station that can be located up to 60 meters away. The base station receives data transmissions from the signal transfer unit and is designed to connect to conventional phone lines for transferring the collected data to a remote monitoring station. The base station may also capture additional clinical data, such as blood pressure data, and to perform data checks. Patient safety is enhanced by the ability of the base station to compare clinical data, e.g., ECG, against given profiles and to mark events when appropriate or when the base station is programmed to do so. Such events are indicated to the physician and could be indicated to the patient by reverse transmission to the signal transfer unit. A remote monitoring station allows the presentation and review of data (including events) forwarded by the sensor band. ECG analysis software and a user-friendly graphical user interface are provided to remotely analyze the transmitted data and to permit system maintenance and upkeep. The system of the invention has useful application to the collection of patient clinical data during drug trials and medical testing for regulatory approvals as well as management of patients with chronic diseases.

One aspect of the invention includes a photoelectric conversion layer that is deposited in direct contact with an array of doped semiconductor pixel contacts. Another aspect of the invention uses a buried field electrode formed within a photoelectric conversion layer. The two inventive concepts can be used separately or combined in a single embodiment.
