Dedicated OFDMA control channel resources can be assigned to mobile device(s). Control information related to one or more logical control channels can be generated by a mobile device. Transmission schemes that can flexibly achieve the desired spatial multiplexing order, spatial diversity order, and channel estimation overhead order are described. For data transmission, the assigned subcarriers and spatial multiplexing order (M) for a receiver are determined, where M≧1. For each assigned subcarrier, M virtual antennas are selected from among V virtual antennas formed with V columns of an orthonormal matrix, where V≧M. V may be selected to achieve the desired spatial diversity order and channel estimation overhead order. Output symbols are mapped to the M virtual antennas selected for each assigned subcarrier by applying the orthonormal matrix. Pilot symbols are also mapped to the V virtual antennas. The mapped symbols are provided for transmission from T transmit antennas, where T≧V. Transmission symbols are generated for the mapped symbols, e.g, based on OFDM or SC-FDMA. Different cyclic delays may be applied for the T transmit antennas to improve diversity.

Systems and methods that facilitate management of interference and communication resources are provided. A differential approach is devised in which other-sector interference (OSI) and communication resources are managed by adjusting an offset (delta) value associated with the resources in response to receiving an indication of other-sector interference. An OSI indication can be issued based on a short and a long time scale, and effective interference metrics over time-frequency resources. The adjusted delta value is communicated to a serving access point, which reassigns communication resources in order to mitigate other-sector interference.

Providing for interference reduction and/or avoidance utilizing backhaul signaling between wireless access points (APs) of a wireless access network (AN) is described herein. By way of example, an interference avoidance request (IAR) can be issued by an AP to reduce signal interference on forward link (FL) and/or downlink (DL) transmissions by neighboring APs. The IAR can be routed via a backhaul network and/or over-the-air via access terminals (ATs) coupled with the AP or one or more interfering APs. Upon receiving the IAR, an interfering AP can determine reduced transmit power levels for FL and/or RL transmissions and respond to the IAR. The response can include reduced power levels and can be sent via the backhaul network or OTA. By employing the backhaul network in full or in part, interference avoidance can be conducted even for semi-planned or unplanned heterogeneous networks coupled by the backhaul.

Techniques for sending control messages are described. In an aspect, assignment messages may be acknowledged based on either linked or dedicated acknowledgement (ACK) resources. A terminal may receive an assignment message from a base station, determine whether to acknowledge the assignment message, and determine ACK resources to use to acknowledge the assignment message. The ACK resources may be linked to a control block on which the assignment message was received, linked to resources given by the assignment message, or assigned to the terminal. The terminal may send the acknowledgement on the ACK resources. In another aspect, a control message may be acknowledged based on ACK resources determined based on the control message or the control block. The ACK resources may be linked to resources assigned by the control message or linked to the control message. The terminal may send an acknowledgement for the control message on the ACK resources.
