    摘要: An improved remote headlamp system includes a single light source operable in conjunction with a reflector arrangement constructed in a manner so as to generate at least two light spots from such single light source. These two light spots are picked up by the separate input ends of light transmissive elements such as optical fibers or light guides. The output ends of the light transmissive devices are directed to either side of the automobile with one side being imaged by a lens or mirror element to provide the spread portion of the standard pattern of road illumination and the other side being imaged by another lens or mirror element to provide the narrow, focused portion of the road illumination pattern. An arrangement for switching between high and low beam operation is also provided.

    摘要: In this automobile lighting system there is (i) a light source that develops light when in an "on" state, (ii) an elongated light guide that has an input end for receiving light from the source and an output end to which this light is transmitted by the light guide, (iii) an indicating device at the output end for controlling the passage of light from the output end to a location exterior to the automobile, and (iv) a lens located between the indicating device and the exterior location for receiving light passing through the indicating device from the light guide output end. The indicating device comprises a shutter having an opaque portion, a light blocking position in which the opaque portion blocks the passage of light from the output end to the lens, and a non-blocking position in which light is allowed to pass through the indicating device to the lens. The indicating device also includes shutter-actuating means for shifting the shutter between its light-blocking position and its non-blocking position while the light source remains in its "on" state.

    摘要: A metal halide discharge lamp is manufactured on a horizontal glass blowing lathe which is indexed by a turntable through angularly spaced work stations. Initially, a length of quartz tubing is formed into a lamp body having an enlarged bulbous midportion defining an arc chamber with tubular necks projecting in opposite directions. Thereafter, a cathode is inserted into one neck, metal halide pellets and a globule of mercury are inserted into the arc chamber, an anode is inserted into the other neck, and hermetic seals are made between the necks and the electrodes. All of the insertions are carried out by moving the various components through the tailstock of the lathe and into the lamp body through one of the necks, the cathode being moved tip-last through the one neck, across the arc chamber and into the other neck. A rotary seal attached to the headstock allows an inert dry gas to be flushed through the lamp body during the assembly steps for the purpose of drying the quartz and the electrodes and to prevent the halide pellets from being exposed to water vapor. Precision in determining the interelectrode gap is achieved by maintaining the initial seizure of the quartz tubing in the headstock of the lathe and referencing bulb formation and electrode insertion to the circular path described by the headstock.

The join is effected by a laser butt weld which permits a symmetric compact seal thereby making possible very small discharge envelopes having minimum end losses. The seal may be effected either by a foliated portion in the wire which is wetted by fused silica, or by a glass bead formed around the wire which wets both wire and fused silica.

    摘要: A centralized lighting system is provided having a high intensity light source which is disposed at approximately the first optical focal point of an ellipsoidally shaped reflector member. A mirror member, disposed in advance of a second optical focal point associated with the reflector member, receives light output from the light source and is constructed so as to divide the light output into at least first and second beam portions. The mirror member is further effective so as to separate the first and second beam portions by at least 90 degrees relative to one another. Corresponding at least first and second optical transmission members are receptive of the first and second beam portions and are effective for communicating the light output to locations remote from the light source. In one embodiment, the mirror member is V-shaped and is constructed of first and second mirror segments joined together so as to form an angle of less than about 85 degrees therebetween. The mirror member is effective for dividing the beam portions so that such beam portions are substantially equivalent to one another in terms of intensity, shape and color. The V-shaped mirror member is further effective for separating the first and second beam portions by approximately 180 degrees relative to one another.

    摘要: An optical coupler for coupling light along an axis between a light port on one side of the coupler and a plurality of light ports on another side of the coupler. The coupler comprises a one-side stage with a light port and a many-side stage with a plurality of arms situated about the axis, each having a light port. A midput region separates the one-side and many-side stages and is situated along the axis where the plurality of arms at least initially starts to split from each other in a direction towards the many-side light ports along the axis. Cross sections of each of the respective initial portions of the arms along the direction are arranged about the same distance from the axis. The cross sectional areas of the arms along the axis are larger at a break point region at which the arms fully separate from each other along the axis than at the many-side light ports. At least a pair of the arms each start to split along the direction in a substantially symmetrical manner about the axis.
