An optical coupler for distributing light in a 360-degree pattern at a small angle is disclosed. The coupler comprises a solid rod with a first end region for receiving light and a second end region for distributing light. The rod tapers up in cross-sectional dimension between the first and second regions so as to decrease the angular distribution of light reflecting internally from the sides of tapered portions of the rod. An axis extends from the second end region towards the first end region. The second end region includes a generally conically shaped void pointing towards the first end region and defining a surface for deflecting light in a 360-degree pattern about the axis at a small angle compared to light entering into the first end region.

A central lighting system for providing light to locations remote from a light source includes first and second ellipsoidally shaped reflectors joined together to surround the light source. The first and second reflectors direct the light from the light source to light guides which are fixed at a position outside of the joined together reflectors. The ellipsoidally shaped reflectors each have an opening or window along an optical axis through which the reflected light passes to the light guides. The configuration of the reflectors allows the light the be received by the light guides outside of the reflectors. A base secures the light source in a fixed position with respect to the reflectors and allows the light source and reflector module to be removed and replaced as a single unit without repositioning the light guides.

An optical couplers and optical coupling system for coupling a source of non-coherent light to a light distribution harness, wherein the couplers are polygonal in cross section to increase light mixing, and the coupler has inlet and outlet arms, and an intermediate bend region configured to achieve compactness and minimal light loss through the bend region. In one embodiment, the bend region is an integral part of the coupler, with the inlet arm having a different cross-sectional dimension from the outlet art in such manner that substantially all light directed from the inlet portion to the bend portion reaches the outlet arm portion, and light rays parallel to the inlet axis are reflected in the bend portion to be directed substantially parallel to the outlet axis. In a second embodiment, the bend region comprises a prism having a pair of parallel spaced surfaces, and inlet, outlet, and third surfaces that are non-parallel to the spaced surfaces. The inlet arm projects from the inlet surface, and the outlet arm projects from the outlet surface. One of the inlet and outlet surfaces forms a first interface with a first material having an index of refraction different from that of the prism, so that light rays within the prism totally internally reflect from the first interface.

A light coupling arrangement for use with a central lighting system having a high brightness light source disposed in a housing includes a plurality of optical fibers having input ends and output ends which are distributed to various spaced apart location in the desired manner. The input ends of the optical fibers are stripped of cladding and compressed together within a first sleeve member so that boundaries between individual optical fiber input ends are substantially eliminated thereby resulting in a color and intensity mixing at such input end which translates to a uniform color and intensity distribution to the various spaced apart locations. A rod member can be disposed in optical contact with the input ends of the optical fibers and together with the optical fibers, slip fit within an outer sleeve member that assists the first sleeve member in maintaining the compressed relation of the input ends of the optical fibers. The rod member is constructed of a light transmissive material and has a higher thermal coefficient than the optical fibers thereby protecting such input ends from damage as may be caused by the high brightness light source.

A projection headlamp lighting system includes a light source to generate light, a light distributing arrangement to distribute the light to a preselected lighting position, and a light projecting arrangement at the lighting position to project the light in the desired pattern. The light distributing arrangement includes a plurality of elongated optical light conductors being of different diameter sizes and having respective input and output ends. The light projecting arrangement includes a housing for holding the output ends of the optical light conductors in an array to project a desired light pattern that is substantially tailored to optimally fit a vehicle's field of illumination with minimal obstruction of the projected light.

A ballast circuit and method of operating gas discharge lamps are disclosed. The ballast circuit generates a relatively low frequency regulated square-wave current which advantageously provides for operating the gas discharge lamps during their run mode. The square-wave current delivered to the electrodes of the gas discharge lamp reduces or substantially eliminates the cataphoresis effects typically created by D.C. and 60 Hz operation of the gas discharge lamp while also reducing or substantially eliminating the detrimental acoustics resonance effects typically created by operating the gas discharge lamps at relatively high frequency of excitations.

An electric incandescent lamp for selective radiant energy distribution is disclosed which employs a reflective film for improved efficiency of the lamp operation. Said lamp further employs a tungsten filament extending the length of its elongated lamp envelope with particular support means for said incandescent filament also being disclosed to precisely position the filament along the principal lamp axis. Various structural configurations for said particular support means are also disclosed so that such filament position is maintained regardless of the lamp spatial orientation.
