An inkjet nozzle assembly includes a nozzle chamber having a floor and a roof, wherein moving portion of the roof is moveable towards the floor for ejection of ink. A thermal bend actuator defines part of the moving portion of the roof, and an active beam of the actuator defines an upper layer of the moving portion.

This invention provides for a nozzle arrangement for a printhead. The nozzle arrangement includes a substrate that defines an ink inlet passage. A nozzle plate is arranged on the substrate and defines an ink chamber in fluid communication with the ink inlet passage and a nozzle aperture in fluid communication with the ink chamber. A nozzle enclosure is arranged on the nozzle plate about the aperture and is configured to isolate the aperture from at least one adjacent aperture. The arrangement also includes a heater element suspended within the chamber and configured to produce ink cavitation when heated to eject a drop of ink via the nozzle aperture. The heater element is configured as a looped element so that no solid surface thereof is in the vicinity of a point of collapse of the produced cavitation.

A printhead comprising a plurality of unit cells, at least one of the plurality of unit cells comprising a substrate including an ink inlet passage. A chamber is defined by chamber sidewalls and at least part of a nozzle plate defining an aperture for ejection of ink from the chamber, the chamber being in fluid communication with the inlet passage. A nozzle enclosure comprising enclosure sidewalls and a roof defining an opening for ejection of ink, the nozzle enclosure surrounding the aperture. Ink ejected from the aperture is directed to the opening of the nozzle enclosure, thereby isolating the aperture from an adjacent aperture of an adjacent unit cell.

A thermoelastic device comprising an expansive element is disclosed. The expansive element is formed from a material, which is preselected by calculating a dimensionless constant for the material. The dimensionless constant is indicative of the potential effectiveness of the material in a particular application, such as a micro-electromechanical system.

A method is provided for manufacturing an inkjet nozzle. The method includes the step of depositing a plastics material layer on a substrate incorporating heater actuator circuitry. The plastics material layer is etched to form a nozzle rim defining an ink port through which ink can be ejected and a plurality of elongate actuator arms extending radially with respect to the nozzle rim. A tapered ink chamber may be etched in the nozzle body so that the ink port and ink chamber are in fluid communication with each other.

A method of fabricating a printhead integrated circuit includes the step of forming a first layer of a polymeric material on a substrate that incorporates drive circuitry. A heater element is formed on the first layer of polymeric material to be connected to the drive circuitry. A second layer of a polymeric material is formed on the heater element and the first layer such that the heater element is embedded in polymeric material. The polymeric layers are etched to define a plurality of radially extending bridging portions which terminate in a nozzle rim and a plurality of actuators which each extend between a respective pair of adjacent bridging portions and each terminate in a free end proximal to the rim. The substrate is etched so that the substrate and the actuators define a nozzle chamber in fluid communication with an ink ejection port defined by the nozzle rim.

An inkjet nozzle includes a substrate defining an ink chamber. A cover is mounted to the substrate and covers the ink chamber. The cover comprises a rim through which ink can be ejected. A plurality of fixed support arms supports the rim. A plurality of movable actuator arms are each located between an adjacent pair of fixed support arms. The actuator arms can move into the chamber to eject ink from the rim. The actuator arms extend radially outwardly from the rim and collectively have rotational symmetry.

A nozzle guard for a printhead is provided. The nozzle guard has a plurality of channels therethrough, each channel corresponding to a respective nozzle on the printhead such that, in use, ink droplets ejected from each nozzle pass through their respective channel towards a print medium. The channels have hydrophobic sidewalls such that ink droplets can rebound off them and be redirected.

A printhead assembly suitable for redirecting ejected ink droplets is provided. The printhead assembly comprises: a printhead including a plurality of nozzles for ejecting ink droplets onto a print medium, the plurality of nozzles being formed on an ink ejection surface of the printhead; and a nozzle guard positioned over the ink ejection surface, the nozzle guard having a corresponding plurality of channels therethrough, the channels being aligned with the nozzles such that ejected ink droplets pass through respective channels towards the print medium. The channels have hydrophobic sidewalls, such that ejected ink droplets can rebound and be redirected.

A printhead suitable for minimizing cross-contamination between nozzles is provided. The printhead comprises a substrate, which includes a plurality of nozzles for ejecting ink droplets onto a print medium. Each nozzle has a nozzle aperture, which is defined in an ink ejection surface of the substrate. The printhead also comprises a plurality of formations on the ink ejection surface. The surface formations are configured to isolate each nozzle from at least one adjacent nozzle, and typically take the form of enclosures surrounding each nozzle.
