Abstract: The present invention is a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of first and second polymer particles; and polymeric organic crosslinked microspheres; wherein, the weight-to-weight ratio of second polymer particles to first polymer particles is in the range of from 50:50 to 80:20; and wherein the weight-to-weight ratio of the microspheres to the first and second polymer particles is in the range of from 3:97 to 20:80. The composition of the present invention is useful semi-gloss or satin paint formulations with excellent mar resistance.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of preparing an aqueous dispersion of nanosized cerium (III) carbonate particles comprising the step of admixing in water a) a water-soluble ammonium cerium (III) salt, b) a water-soluble carbonate, and c) a capping ligand to form an aqueous dispersion of cerium (III) carbonate particles having a resultant z-average particle size is in the range of from 5 nm to 500 nm. The method is useful for the preparation of an additive that is useful in formulations that contain polymer, pigments, dyes, or tints, or a combination thereof, to promote color retention and attenuate unwanted color formation in coatings formed from these formulations.

Abstract: The present invention relates to composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of microspheres and a class of a nonionic polyalkylene oxide of a distyryl or tristyryl phenol or an anionic polyalkylene oxide salt of a distyryl or tristyryl phenol and a process for preparing the composition. The microspheres have an average particle size in the range of from 1 μm to 25 μm, as well as a low coefficient of variation and low gel concentration; the composition is useful in coatings applications, especially where a matte finish is desired.

Abstract: The present invention provides a composition comprising 1) an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles having a core-shell morphology wherein the core protuberates from the shell; wherein the core comprises from 5 to 90 weight percent structural units of a fluoroalkylated monomer, and 2) less than 0.09 weight percent structural units of a phosphorus acid monomer; and wherein the shell comprises from 0.1 to 5 weight percent of itaconic acid or a phosphorus acid monomer, based on the weight of the shell. The present invention addresses a need in the art by providing a way of selectively concentrating fluoroalkyl functionality into polymer particles with acorn morphology, thereby providing an improvement in dirt pick-up resistance of the subsequent coating.
