Abstract: A communications device configured to detect one or more beams of signals transmitted by each of a plurality of infrastructure equipment forming a plurality of cells of the wireless communications network, each of the beams being separately identifiable and forming a directional bias with respect to a location of the infrastructure equipment. The communications device is configured to perform measurements for evaluating a quality of the plurality of cells including one or more beams on signals received from each of the detected beams, to determine from the evaluation of each of the cells, and if one or more of the cells satisfies predetermined conditions to perform a process for identifying one or more of the cells which should be used by the communications device for transmitting data.

Abstract: Schemes for supporting device-to-device, D2D, communications between terminal devices in a wireless telecommunication system. A network entity, e.g. a base station, establishes a set pool of radio resources to be reserved for use for D2D communications and communicates an indication of these resources to terminal devices. On an ongoing basis the network entity monitors the extent to which the set of radio resources reserved for D2D communications is being used, for example based on feedback received from terminal devices or its own measurements. If it is determined the set of radio resources reserved for D2D communications is being under-utilized or over-utilized, the network entity may establish an updated set of radio resources to be used for D2D communications, and communicate this to the terminal devices. Thus a mechanism is provided for dynamically adjusting the size of a set of resources available for D2D communications in response to changing resource utilization.

Abstract: A method of allocating resources for communications in a mobile telecommunication system wherein the mobile telecommunication system provides a wireless interface for a base station to communicate with communications devices and wherein a communications device is operable to transmit signals to another communications device using resources of the wireless interface and in accordance with a device-to-device communication protocol. A first pool of the resources is allocated to device-to-device communications of the broadcast type and a second pool of the resources is allocated to a device-to-device communications of the unicast type, the second pool of resources being separate from the first pool. The method comprises a first communications device transmitting broadcast messages using resources of the first resources pool and a second communications device transmitting unicast messages using resources of the second resources pool.

Abstract: A communications device configured to transmit signals representing data to one or more in-coverage communications devices forming with the communications device a group, one of the in-coverage communications devices acting as an active relay node for the communications device, so that the in-coverage communications device can transmit signals representing the data to the infrastructure equipment of the mobile communications network, and to receive signals representing the data from the in-coverage communications device acting as the active relay node. The signals transmitted to the in-coverage communications device are received according to a device-to-device communications protocol, wherein the signals transmitted by the communications device or received by the communications device include an identifier which identifies the signals to the in-coverage communications device. One of the other in-coverage communications device can be selected by the infrastructure equipment to act as the active relay node.

Abstract: A method of operating first and second terminal devices for transmitting data in a device-to-device communication mode in a wireless telecommunications system supporting communications on a first carrier operating over a first frequency band and a second carrier operating over a second frequency band. The first terminal device transmits control signalling on the first carrier and this is received by the second terminal device. The control signalling comprises an indication of an allocation of radio resource blocks on the second carrier to be used for transmitting user-plane data from the first terminal device to the second terminal device. The first terminal device then proceeds to transmit the user-plane data to the second terminal device on the second carrier using the radio resource blocks on the second carrier identified by the control signalling. The control signalling may also provide an indication of an allocation of radio resource blocks on the first carrier to be used for transmitting user-plane data to the second terminal device.
