The present invention relates to a method of isolating a nucleic acid molecule form a biological sample. More particularly, the present invention relates to a method of isolating ribonucleic acid molecule from a biological sample. The method of the present invention is useful in a range of applications including, but not limited to, diagnostic applications and research and development applications, to the extent that the isolation of nucleic acid molecules, and in particular ribonucleic acid molecules, is required. Most particularly, the method of the present invention provides for the isolation of ribonucleic acid molecules which are suitable for analysis by reverse transcriptase-PCR.

A system for determining the magnetic permeability of a material is provided. Two electrical inductors formed as primary and secondary concentric coils share a common magnetic core space. An AC voltage applied to the primary coil creates a magnetic flux in the core proportional to the magnetic permeability of a sample of the material positioned within the core space. The magnetic flux induces an AC voltage in the secondary coil indicative of the sample magnetic permeability. When the material is a magnetorheological fluid, the magnetic permeability is proportional to the concentration of magnetic particles in the sample and can be back-calculated from the amplitude of the secondary voltage signal. Sensitivity and resolution can be increased by using two identical sets of coils wherein a reference material forms a core for the primary set and the MR fluid sample forms a core for the secondary set.

A coating applied to at least a portion of the surfaces of reactors, reactor internals, other reactor components, and/or heater tubes is provided in order to minimize the formation of metal catalyzed coke in hydrocarbon conversion processes operating at temperatures at about 350° C. (662° F.) or greater and in reducing environments. These coatings may comprise Nickel coatings or complexes thereof, such as Ni—Al, Ni—Cr/Cr carbide, as well as aluminum painted coatings that are applied in a reduction cure process (e.g., application temperatures of about 600° C. (1112° F.)). Additionally, where H2S is necessary for the process, such as to minimize thermal cracking, the coatings also reduce corrosion of base metal due to sulfidation attack and eliminate the requirement of continuous replacement of reactor internals and other components.

A rod assembly for a fuel bundle of a nuclear reactor may include an upper end piece, lower end piece and a plurality of rod segments attached between the upper and lower end pieces and to each other so as to form an axial length of the rod assembly. The rod assembly may include an adaptor subassembly provided at given connection points for connecting adjacent rod segments or a given rod segment with one of the upper and lower end pieces. The connection points along the axial length of the rod assembly may be located where the rod assembly contacts a spacer in the fuel bundle. One (or more) of the rod segments may include an irradiation target therein for producing a desired isotope when a fuel bundle containing one (or more) rod assemblies is irradiated in a core of the reactor.

Embodiments relate to a substrate or wafer edge support having an emmisivity greater than that of a silicon wafer, where the edge support is for supporting a wafer during processing to form circuit devices on or in the wafer. Embodiments also include temperature sensors, heat conducting gas jets, and photonic energy can be directed to sense and control the temperature of the edge support and/or wafer edge during annealing to reduce temperature roll-off or roll-up at the edge as compared to the center of the wafer. Specifically, use of an edge support having an emmisivity greater than or equal to that of the wafer during processing allows helium gas jets directed at the edge support and/or wafer edge to reduce temperature roll-up at the edge during annealing. Because wafers from different processes and anneal locations may all have different emmisivities, use of the feedback loop will enable one edge ring to support the uniform anneal of wafers with a range of different emmisivities.

Electronic control messages for controlling machine elements are sent among the computers and controllers using a novel message protocol to enable both broadcast messages and individual messages to be employed.
