    摘要: A method for removing pipe tuberculation includes the initial step of preparing an access point in the existing pipe by digging to the pipe and sawing a section from the pipe or creating an access port. The section of the pipeline to have its tuberculation removed is isolated by closing valves or creating another access point and sealing the end. Then, a reaming tool is introduced to the interior of the pipe. The reaming tool is attached to a hollow rod string capable of producing moderate thrust and pullback force, and must also produce sufficient torque when rotated. A horizontal directional drilling or “HDD” machine on the surface or in a pit dug out for this purpose applies the aforementioned forces to the rod string.

    摘要: An impactor for use with a directional boring machine for replacement of underground pipes includes a bursting head having a rearwardly opening recess and a front end opening that communicates with the recess. An inlet pipe is connected at its front end to a distal end of the drill string and extends into the recess of the bursting head through the front end opening. A striker is mounted for sliding movement along the inlet pipe, and a distributing mechanism responsive to pressure fluid supplied through the drill string and inlet pipe causes the striker to reciprocate in the rearwardly opening recess of the head to deliver forward impacts against the bursting head. The striker and distributing mechanism are mounted in a tubular housing, and a pulling connection is provided by which the impactor can be pulled by the drill string while the striker is delivering impacts against the head in the same direction as a pulling force exerted by the drill string. The bursting head is preferably slidably mounted on the inlet pipe and moves forward relative to the inlet pipe and drill string in response to an impact of the striker against the bursting head. The impactor can be readily used with existing directional boring machines.

    摘要: The present invention provides an improved apparatus for mounting an electronic device such as a sonde therein for use in directional drilling. Such an apparatus includes an elongated housing having projections at opposite ends of the housing for connecting the housing to other components of the boring machine, an elongated internal chamber configured to receive an electronic device therein and having an elongated access opening which extends along an exterior surface of the housing, and a cover sized to close the access opening, the cover having a first hole extending therethrough. The housing includes a second hole which comes into alignment with the first hole when the cover is in a position to close the access opening, and has a third hole at least partially intersecting the second hole, whereby when a pin having a head for holding down the cover is inserted in the first and second holes, a retainer such as a roll pin for engaging the pin may be inserted in the third hole in a manner effective to engage the pin so that the pin holds down the cover. According to preferred form of the invention, the pin preferably has an enlarged diameter head which seats against a step in the first hole to hold down the cover, and a concave groove that comes into alignment with a round interior surface of the third hole when the pin is fully inserted so that the head engages the step. The retainer can then extend into the concave groove in the pin to prevent removal of the pin from the first and second holes. A side load sonde housing according to the invention has improved strength yet remains easy to open and close.

    摘要: A pneumatic ground piercing tool according to the invention has a reversing mechanism provided as part of the air distributing mechanism. Such a tool includes an elongated tubular housing having a rear opening, a head assembly including an anvil, a striker disposed for reciprocation within an internal chamber of the housing to impart impacts to a rear impact surface of the anvil for driving the body through the ground, an air distributing mechanism for effecting reciprocation of the striker, and a tail assembly mounted in a rear end opening of the housing that secures the striker and air distributing mechanism in the housing. In one embodiment, the outer bushing of the valve sleeve can slide a short distance relative to the air supply tube and has an intermediate radial port which selectively communicates with the air supply conduit. The valve sleeve also includes a detent mechanism for securing the air supply tube in its forward or reverse position. A biasing device such as an resilient tube biases the detent mechanism to an unlocked position when the compressed air is off, and is overcome by air pressure so that the detent assumes a locked position when the compressed air is on.

Opening the supplemental air line to the atmosphere produces a short stroke forward mode of operation useful for operations wherein a less forceful impact is desirable.

    摘要: A motorcycle has a frame, a front wheel and Y-shaped rockers attached to the axle of the front wheel on either side. Also attached to each rocker is a rigid fork which directly connects the rocker to the frame of the motorcycle and a springed fork which connects the rocker to shock absorbing means which are likewise mounted on the rigid fork. The springed fork is mounted to the rocker intermediate the points at which the rigid fork and axle are mounted to the rocker. The rigid fork is attached to the rocker using an adjustable, split spherical bearing which is attached and held to the rigid fork by a stud. This bearing arrangement engages a pair of bearing races which are held in two prongs of the Y-shaped rocker. Similarly, the springed fork has a stud passing therethrough which also holds a spherical bearing. The bearing engages a bearing race which is held within the rocker.A brake caliper is pivotably mounted to the axle of the front wheel and has its top end connected to the rigid fork of the motorcycle by a reaction link. The reaction link is oriented so that when a downward force is applied along the rigid fork, the reaction link and brake caliper act to induce a force upward resisting the downward force. This configuration increases the effective resistance of the shock absorbing system of the motorcycle and provides for additional suspension during heavy braking of the motorcycle.

    摘要: A dynamic steering tool for use with a horizontal directional drilling machine. The tool comprises and inner member, an outer member, a steering member, a drill stem, and a drill bit. The drill stem extends from within a borehole to the surface while the outer member only extends the length of the inner member within the borehole. The outer member is powered via the use of a progressive cavity motor. In operation, the drill stem, inner member, and drill bit rotate in a clockwise position while the outer member rotates in a counterclockwise direction. Rotating the outer member opposite the inner member allows the outer member to remain stationary and cause the tool to steer while the inner member continues to rotate.
