摘要: In the blow molding of a container from a preform in a heated blow mold wherein the container has formed as part of the preform a neck portion which remains unoriented, there is a tendency for the neck portion to distort relative to the body so that there is a perpendicularity problem. In accordance with this invention, the problem has been solved by either crystallizing that portion of the preform which remains unoriented in the blow molding of the container so as to both provide a clear line of demarcation between the unoriented and biaxially oriented portion of the container and to increase the glass temperature of the preform portion so as to prevent shrinkage due to conductive heating. In accordance with another form of the invention, that portion of the preform immediately below the neck portion is provided with an exterior weakening ring or notch which also provides a clear line of demarcation between the oriented and unoriented portion of the container so as to eliminate differential radial shrinkage and existing perpendicularity problems.

摘要: Method and apparatus for making multilayer injection molded plastic articles. In one embodiment, a relatively thin inner sleeve layer is molded in a first mold cavity on a core, the first mold cavity being heated to maintain an outer surface of the inner sleeve layer at an elevated temperature, and the core and sleeve layer are transferred to a second mold cavity to mold a relatively thick outer layer over the sleeve layer while the outer surface is at the elevated temperature, where the elevated temperature is selected to provide melt adhesion between the inner sleeve and the outer layer during the second molding step. In another embodiment, a method of injection molding is provided in which a first thermoplastic material is used to form a first preform portion having an average percent crystallinity of at least about 30%, and a second thermoplastic material is injection molded to form a second preform portion which remains substantially amorphous.

摘要: A pasteurizable plastic container having movable panels to alleviate internal pressure changes during pasteurization in order to avoid uncontrolled permanent deformation of the container body. As molded, each panel has a shallow recessed central wall which during the increased temperature and pressurization of pasteurization, moves outwardly to alleviate at least part of the internal pressure. During cooling, the panels move back inwardly to alleviate at least part of the negative pressure. The container may further include hoop ribs in the land areas above and below the panels, an axially elongatable hoop rib in an upper shoulder section, and an angled heel portion adjacent the standing ring. These additional elements further restrict uncontrolled bulging of the post walls, which would lead to improper label application and/or excessive volume change.

摘要: A panel design for a hot-fillable plastic container has a tall and slender panel section. The panel configuration provides increased resistance to longitudinal bending and hoop failure, yet provides good hoop flexibility to maximize vacuum panel movement. The panel section has a substantially cylindrical circumference with a plurality of vacuum panels symmetrically disposed about the panel circumference, post walls between the vacuum panels, and land areas above and below the vacuum panels. The ratio of vacuum panel height D to panel diameter C is on the order of 0.85 to 1.05. Longitudinal post ribs are provided in the post walls. The land areas above and below the vacuum panels are of a height E greater than on the order of 0.45 inch, and the ratio of the land area height E to panel diameter C is on the order of greater than 0.1. Circumferential hoop ribs are provided in the land areas to prevent ovalization and hoop collapse.

According to the method, a sidewall-forming section of a preform is initially expanded, heated to contract and crystallize the same, and than reexpanded; a base-forming portion of the preform is shielded from the heat treatment and is expanded either before or after the heat treatment step.

摘要: A hot-fillable plastic container having a panel section with vacuum panels and an end grip, which panel section resists ovalization and other deformation during filling, product cooling, and handling. The container has a substantially-cylindrical panel section, with a pair of vertically-elongated vacuum panels disposed on opposing sides of a vertical plane passing through a vertical centerline of the container. Front and rear label attachment areas are provided between the vacuum panels. A pair of vertical ribs are disposed on either side of each vacuum panel which act as hinge points to maximize movement of a concave recess in the vacuum panel; the vertical ribs also resist longitudinal bending. The concave recess is formed at an initial inwardly-bowed position with respect to the panel circumference, and is movable outwardly to a second position within the panel circumference upon increased pressure during filling, and movable inwardly to a third position to accommodate the vacuum which forms during product cooling.
