In an aspect, an injection molding machine is provided and incorporates a mold block with a plurality of sides including an injection side at which hollow parts are formed in mold cavities, a first post-mold cooling side whereat the hollow parts are cooled, and a part transfer side where parts are transferred out of the mold block. Optionally additional post-mold cooling sides are provided. A takeout structure is provided to remove the hollow parts from molding cores on the injection side, to transfer the hollow parts to the first post-mold cooling side, and to subsequently transfer the hollow parts to the part transfer side. The takeout structure holds the hollow parts by their neck portions and cools their neck portions.

This invention relates to articles made of polyester, preferably polyethylene terephthalate (PET), having coated directly to at least one of the surfaces thereof one or more layers of thermoplastic material with good gas-barrier characteristics, and novel methods of making such articles. Preferably the barrier-coated articles take the form of preforms coated by at least one layer of barrier material and the containers blow-molded therefrom. Such barrier-coated containers are preferably of the type to hold beverages such as soft drinks, beer or juice. The preferred barrier materials have a lower permeability to oxygen and carbon dioxide than PET as well as key physical properties similar to PET. The materials and methods provide that the barrier layers have good adherence to PET, even during and after the blow molding process to form containers from preforms. Preferred barrier coating materials include poly(hydroxyamino ethers). In one preferred method, preforms are injection molded then barrier-coated immediately thereafter.

Sleeve molding apparatus and methods for making multi-layer injection molded plastic articles in successive mold cavities. In a first molding step, an inner sleeve is molded on a core in a first mold cavity, which may comprise a full body length sleeve or only a partial sleeve, such as an upper neck finish portion. The sleeve and core are withdrawn from the first mold cavity while the sleeve is still warm, and transferred without substantial delay to a second mold cavity for injection molding an outer layer which bonds to the inner sleeve. By transferring the sleeve at an elevated temperature into the second mold cavity, an improved bond is formed between the inner sleeve and outer layer which resists separation during a later reheat stretch blow molding step, and/or in use of the resulting article. In a preferred embodiment, a pasteurizable beer container is provided having a finish-only sleeve of a PEN polymer. In a second embodiment, a returnable and refillable water container is provided having a full-length body sleeve of a PEN polymer. A multi-station injection molding apparatus is provided having a transfer mechanism, such as a rotatable turret or reciprocating shuttle, for cost-effective manufacture of preforms simultaneously in multiple cavity sets.

Disclosed is a preferred mold design for producing plastic, injection molded preforms, which may be blow-molded into a container of a final, desired shape. A preferred mold includes a combination of hardened material components and high heat transfer material components to provide a mold having good wear characteristics, for a sufficiently long useful life, and to enable rapid cooling of the injected preform, in order to reduce the cycle time of an injection and cooling cycle. In some arrangements, the hardened materials may form a portion of the preform cavity thereby slowing the rate of cooling in those areas and inducing a semi-crystalline or crystalline structure in the cooled preform.

A preform and container each having a crystallized neck finish and method of making the same, wherein the method involves introducing a first thermoplastic material into a first mold section to form a substantially crystallized neck portion of a preform, and introducing a second thermoplastic material into a second mold section to form a substantially amorphous body-forming portion of a preform. The first material may have a substantially higher crystallization rate than the second material, and/or the first mold section may be at a higher temperature than the second mold section. In one embodiment, an indexer carrying two core sets is movable between first and second cavity sets for sequentially molding the neck portions on the first core set in the first cavity set, and then transferring the cores and neck portions to the second cavity set for molding the body-forming portions. The method enables cost-effective manufacture of preforms with crystallized neck finishes and enables production of a thermal resistant finish within a close dimensional tolerance.

A container of the type adapted to contain an ingestible product and configured to having a multi-layer wall portion. The wall portion includes a multi-component layer having at least two discreet sublayers with an interface extending between the sublayers and extending longitudinally of the container and terminating in a threaded end portion. One sublayer is virgin polyethylene terephthalate, and the other sublayer is a barrier formed of a copolyester of terephthalic acid of low permeability. An outer layer material formed of a recycled polyethylene terephthalate has a thickness greater than the thickness of the barrier sublayer. The several layer materials have refracted indices within the range of 1.55 to 1.75. A process for the production of a multi-layer plastic container involving injecting a virgin polyethylene terephthalate and a thermoplastic barrier material through a lamellar injection system to provide a composite-multilamellae stream. The composite stream is supplied to a premold to form an initial preform. Recycled polyethylene terephthalate is then supplied over the initial preform to form an outer layer of a final preform which is then subjected to a blow molding operation to form the container. Alternatively, virgin polyethylene terephthalate can be supplied to a premold to form an initial preform. Recycled polyethylene terephthalate and a thermoplastic barrier polymer are then injected through a lamellar injection system to form a composite stream of discreet lamella of these materials which are supplied over the initial preform to form a final preform which is then blow molded to the desired configuration.
