    摘要: A rotary forging and quenching apparatus and method forms and rapidly cools an axial-symmetric object from a spin formable material. The process uses a preheated billet which is clamped between opposed fixture mandrels which have a circumferential die shape and with quench solution channels running through the fixtures. The mandrels are spun and at least one contour roller of a mating circumferential die shape is brought into bearing contact against the billet in order to spin-form the material into the desired die shape. The mandrel and peripheral margin of the spinning billet are flooded with a quench solution coolant while being spin formed. This process streamlines the manufacturing of wheels or other axial-symmetric parts like cylinders, hemispheres, cones, etc. Typically, parts that require heat treatment, like aluminum alloys, will benefit from this process. The process minimizes the distortion encountered in heat treatment and eliminates the need to add extra material to ensure final dimensions. This reduces material, machining and manufacturing costs.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for cooling heat-treated metallic work pieces, particularly jet engine components that are normally round in shape, have a complex radial cross-section, and are subject to subsequent machining steps, includes a set of concentric air quench delivery tubes for directing a compressed air quench onto specified areas of the work piece for cooling. A first set of tubes is located above the work piece, and a second set of tubes is located below the work piece. The tubes include a multiplicity of bores around their circumference. The air quench tubes are placed in close proximity to the relatively thicker and more massive portion of the work piece, while the thinner and less massive portions are allowed to cool in normal ambient air, thereby cooling the entire part at a substantially uniform rate. Shields placed at specified locations blocks the flow of compressed air and redirect it away from the thin portions of the part.

    摘要: In the cooling of a steel railway car wheel having relatively thick hub and tread portions and a relatively thin plate portion, it is important that undue stresses are not set up in the plate portion and, simultaneously, that the tread is hardened for good wear qualities while the hub is kept soft for easy machinability. These objectives are achieved by providing a conveyor having suspended thereover, at spaced intervals, non-metallic insulating disks having a diameter approximately equal to or slightly larger than the wheel hub diameter, moving the wheels in intermittent steps along the conveyor so that the wheels stop for a predetermined period of time directly under successive disks until the hubs have cooled from a temperature of about 1,700* F. to below the critical transformation temperature which is about 1,200* F., the other portions of the wheels having cooled at a faster rate.
