When the plunger moves through each delivery stroke in a low engine load region, the second cut-off port engages each one of the spill ports successively to cause injection of fuel into only part of the engine cylinders.

An injection pump of conventional design is associated with the internal combustion engine and further includes a quantity adjustment device, the position of which acts as a control variable for the load. With this control variable, a booster apparatus is controlled via a comparison apparatus; the output variable of the booster apparatus in turn is the control variable for the actuation of an adjustment device which acts on an exhaust recirculation control apparatus. When a threshold value for load is exceeded, the exhaust recirculation is precluded. The control variable is preferably formed as a fuel pressure signal with the fuel withdrawn from the suction chamber of the injection pump. Apparatuses are proposed by means of which, in the event of the actuation of the control apparatus for exhaust recirculation, the smallest possible removal quantity of fuel is required for control purposes.

The control spring mechanism is connected to one end of a control lever which in turn is connected at its other end to a fuel supply quantity setting member. The control lever serves to actuate the fuel supply quantity setting member in accordance with the forces applied to the control lever by the control spring mechanism and an r.p.m.-dependent force applying structure which applies a force to the control lever in opposition to the force applied by the control spring mechanism. The control spring mechanism includes a compression spring mounted between the control lever and a setting lever, a first connecting member and a second connecting member. The first connecting member is connected to that end of the control spring furthest from the setting lever, while the second connecting member is connected to that end of the control spring furthest from the control lever.
