For the sake of improving quiet operation during idling and at low partial load by lengthening the injection duration, a fuel injection pump for internal combustion engines has a relief conduit originating in a pump work chamber, the relief conduit including a throttle and being blockable at upper partial load, full load and openable by a control slide. The relief conduit is controlled by a pressure maintenance valve, the opening pressure of which can be adapted from outside to the opening pressure of injection nozzles. The control slide is controlled by a centrifugal governor in such a manner that at idling and lower partial load. The control slide is shifted by the pressure in a fuel low-pressure chamber into its operating position that uncovers the relief conduit, and at upper partial load, full load and starting, the control slide is disconnected from the low-pressure chamber, so that it can drop back into its basic position that blocks off the relief conduit.

For fuel injection quantity regulation, an annular slide that is displaceable on a pump piston is provided, by way of which the pump work chamber can be relieved. To attain a low injection rate in the idling range, in addition to a first outlet opening, controlled by an upper edge of the annular slide, second outlet openings axially offset from the first are provided, for a relief conduit of the pump work chamber which cooperate with a radial control opening, which communicates with the pump suction chamber and is disposed in the wall of the annular slide. In the opening direction of this control opening, a groove provided with a throttle is provided, by way of which during idling operation, prior to the opening of the first relief opening, fuel can flow out of the pump piston in order to decrease the pumping rate of the pump piston. For higher load ranges, the control opening is moved out of the operative range of the groove which is effected by rotating the annular slide or interrupting the communication of the control opening with the suction chamber.

The supply of fuel to the pump work chamber is effected from a fuel supply chamber, which is kept at a controlled pressure by a fuel feed pump. To limit the maximum speed of the engine supplied by the fuel injection pump in the event of failure of the control unit, a valve is provided in the intake line of the fuel feed pump. Using this valve, the flow cross section of the intake line can be varied or closed. By means of the modification of the fuel pressure in the fuel supply chamber effected thereby, a control of the fuel injection quantity that is not dependent on the position of the quantity-determining member is attained.

An electronic control unit is responsive to operating conditions of the engine for driving the selector valve to selectively assume closed and open positions. Fuel is pressure delivered to the fuel injection valves from one or both of the first and second pump working chambers, depending upon whether the selector valve assumes the closed position or the open position. The pump is so constructed that the plunger has an increased delivery stroke, when the selector valve is controlled by the control means to assume a predetermined one of the closed position and the open position and at the same time the control sleeve assumes a predetermined position relative to the plunger.

In a fuel injection system, as an engine crankshaft rotates twice, a working chamber contracts and expands a number of times equal to twice the number of engine combustion chambers. Each time the working chamber expands, fuel is conducted to the working chamber. During alternate contractions of the working chamber, fuel is directed from the working chamber toward each of the combustion chambers in sequence to be injected thereinto at a first timing. During the intervening contractions of the working chamber, fuel is directed from the working chamber toward each of the combustion chambers in sequence to be injected thereinto at a second timing. The second timing follows the first timing by a fraction of at least one operating stroke of the engine. In another fuel injection system of this invention, fuel is periodically injected into an engine combustion chamber at a first timing with respect to rotation of the engine crankshaft. Fuel is also periodically injected into the combustion chamber at a second timing with respect to rotation of the crankshaft. The quantity of fuel injected at the first timing increases to a preset maximum level as the quantity of fuel injected at the second timing increases to a predetermined level. The first timing fuel quantity remains at the preset maximum level as the second timing fuel quantity increases from the predetermined level.

A fuel injection rate deducing system for a diesel engine includes a fuel injection pump and a fuel feed pump. The injection pump has an inlet, an outlet, and an overflow outlet. The outlet is connected to the engine to conduct fuel from the injection pump to the engine to effect fuel injection. The overflow outlet is internally connected to the inlet. A fuel feed line is connected to the inlet to conduct fuel to the injection pump. The feed pump is disposed in the feed line to drive fuel into the injection pump via the feed line. A fuel return line connects the overflow outlet to the feed line at a position upstream of the feed pump. At least some of the fuel conducted to the injection pump via the inlet exits from the injection pump via the overflow outlet and then all enters the feed pump via the return line and the feed line. A flowmeter measures the rate of fuel flow through the feed line upstream of the connection of the return line to the feed line. The measured results are used to indicate the rate of fuel injection via the injection pump.
