摘要: A centrifugal pump with an outer casing which has one or more discharge branches, with an inner casing which is installed in the outer casing and rotatably surrounds a pump shaft, and an impeller which is mounted on the shaft at the inlet of the outer casing has one or more fluid flow guiding inserts, one for each discharge branch, in an annular chamber between the inner and outer casings. The inserts are offset relative to the respective discharge branches in the direction of rotation of the shaft and have front faces provided on spur-shaped front portions immediately behind the exit end of the impeller. The inserts further have guide surfaces including first sections adjacent the inner casing, second sections adjacent the outer casing, and third sections which direct a portion of the fluid medium directly from the exit end of the impeller to the corresponding discharge branches. The guide surfaces establish for the fluid medium a path which resembles that defined by the thread on a shank forming part of a screw and having a diameter which increases in a direction from the exit end of the impeller toward the discharge branches of the other casing.

Through careful control of the other pump dimensions, the increase in wear normally associated with higher efficiency narrow pumps can be reduced or eliminated.

摘要: A centrifugal main fuel pump (10') for a gas turbine engine has a housing (18') in which a centrifugal impeller (12') is mounted for rotation. The impeller discharges flow to a collector (20') and diffuser (22'). A low flow diffuser (26) has its inlet opening positioned closely adjacent the outer periphery of the impeller. Proper design and placement of the low flow diffuser ensures that a high percentage of the fluid energy available in the high velocity flow adjacent the impeller outer periphery is recovered as pressure rise. The low flow diffuser produces adequate fuel flow at the pressure necessary for engine light-off while the first mentioned diffuser recovers a lower pressure rise but is adapted to supply higher engine fuel flow demand in the normal range of operation. A check valve (34) prevents flow from the low flow diffuser from returning to the impeller. The check valve opens to allow the first mentioned diffuser to supply fuel when its discharge pressure exceeds that of the low flow diffuser. The addition of the low flow diffuser to the centrifugal pump results in minimal additional parasitic power loss, cost and complexity.

摘要: A volute for a pump featuring a volute or casing having a pump inlet for receiving a fluid being pumped, a pump discharge for providing the fluid, and a volute or casing vane forming double volutes therein. The volute has an upper cutwater farthest from the pump discharge defining an upper cutwater throat area and an end of passage for the upper cutwater, and also has a lower cutwater closest to the pump discharge defining a lower cutwater throat and a corresponding end of passage for the lower cutwater. The upper cutwater throat area is dimensioned to be greater than and not equal to the lower cutwater throat area so the upper cutwater throat area and the lower cutwater throat area provide substantially equal flow velocity at both the upper cutwater and the lower cutwater in response to an angular sweep of the fluid being pumped. The end of passage for the upper cutwater is dimensioned with an upper cutwater passage area that is greater than and not equal to a corresponding lower cutwater passage area of the corresponding end of passage for the lower cutwater so that upper and lower cutwater passage areas at the pump discharge are balanced as a function of differing rates of flow of the fluid being pumped therein and so that the fluid being pumped from associated ends of the upper and lower cutwater passage areas meets at the pump discharge with a substantially equal velocity.

The cutwater includes an inner surface, an outer surface and a leading edge joining the inner and outer surfaces and has a cross-sectional contour in a midplane perpendicular to the axial direction. The cross-sectional contour includes a starting point at the leading edge, and a minimum point on the inner surface, the starting point defined by a tangent to the leading edge, the tangent intersecting the central axis, and the minimum point defined by a location, at which the inner surface has a minimum distance from the central axis. A straight profile chord located in the cross-sectional contour, and extending from the cutwater starting point to the cutwater minimum point, has a maximum orthogonal distance from the inner surface being at most 15% of the length of the profile chord.

摘要: A centrifugal pump system having an impeller rotating with first and second magnetic structures on opposite surfaces. A levitation magnetic structure is disposed at a first end of a pump housing having a levitating magnetic field for axially attracting the first magnetic structure. A multiphase magnetic stator at a second end of the pump housing generates a rotating magnetic field for axially and rotationally attracting the second magnetic structure. A commutator circuit provides a plurality of phase voltages to the stator. A sensing circuit determines respective phase currents. A controller calculates successive commanded values for the phase voltages in response to the determined phase currents and a variable commutation angle. The angle is selected to correspond to an axial attractive force of the stator that maintains a levitation of the impeller at a centered position within the pumping chamber.
