Technologies are described herein for providing dynamic application of a rendering scale factor. In some configurations, when a command for scaling a document is received, the technologies described herein selectively apply a rendering scale factor to select elements based on contextual information related to the elements and/or other elements of a document. A computing device may render a document having an element, such as an image, and other elements, such as text. Upon receiving a command to apply a rendering scale factor to the document, techniques herein determine contextual information related to the image. Based on the contextual data, the image is scaled based on the rendering scale factor, a weighted rendering scale factor or kept at its original size. By selectively applying the rendering scale factor to certain elements, the layout of the document may be preserved even when a user zooms into or out of the document.

A graphic removal process for document images involves two stages: First, removal of graphics in the document image based on heuristic text analyses; and second, text recovery to recover some text that is accidentally removed during the first stage. The first stage uses a relatively aggressive strategy to ensure that all graphics components are removed, which also temporarily leads to the removal of some text; the lost text will then be recovered using the text recovery technique. The heuristic text analyses utilize the geometric properties of text characters and consider the properties of text characters in relation to their neighbors. The text recovery technique starts from the text that remain after the first stage, and recovers any connected component that is at least partially located within a pre-defined neighboring area around any of the text components in the intermediate document image.

For each field, semantic properties are evaluated for the descriptor and text content against a plurality of mapping rules to determine whether the field is consistent with one of a plurality of fields of a target format. Each mapping rule specifies characteristics associated with one of the fields in the target format. Once so determined, a mapping from the first field to the second field is defined.

An abbreviation element can be an abbreviation, an acronym, or an initialism. The abbreviation element can be presented in a condensed format or an expanded format. Abbreviation elements can be identified in a received text-based electronic communication. The presentation preference of each identified abbreviation element can be intelligently determined for each recipient from the abbreviation usage history data. An abbreviation-adjusted text-based electronic communication can be created for each recipient using the received text-based electronic communication and the determined presentation preference. The abbreviation-adjusted text-based electronic communication can be conveyed to the recipient.
