    摘要: In a packet-based communications network, where proxy servers guide the routing of requests and responses between destinations to aid in establishing the flow of voice or other media streams between the destinations, and where at least some destinations are assigned an IP or other network address and a telephone number or other symbolic address, a system for establishing the routing of the media streams that comprises at least one directory database associating at least some destination network addresses with symbolic addresses and, in at least some cases, also with media type and format or CODEC capability information combined with at least one proxy server connecting to the directory database. Programs within the proxy server cause the proxy server, in response to receiving a given request which contains a symbolic address, to route the given received request to a destination whose network address the directory database associates with the symbolic address contained in the given received request. In the case where the directory database associates two or more network addresses with the symbolic address contained in such a given received request, the proxy server routes the given received request to the one of the two or more network addresses which the directory database associates with media type and format or CODEC capability information most compatible with the media type and format or CODEC capabilities of the destination that sent out the given received request.

    摘要: A telephone switching device which includes a detector for identifying a call waiting (CW) signal when the incoming telephone line is in use. The detector device automatically switches the incoming telephone line to the second call and monitors for additional coded function signals such as a facsimile machine calling (CNG) signal indicating that a data transmission is desired. Appropriate switching functions are provided to connect attached telephony data devices for receiving the incoming data transmission. A microprocessor is used for receiving various function signals and performing the switching of the telephone line and attached apparatus. This allows the reception of an incoming data transmission on a single telephone line while the line is already in use. A voice message can be provided before the switching of the telephone line in response to the CW signal warning the first caller of the impending switch. Provisions are included for verifying incoming function signals and time delay sequences are incorporated for the attached data apparatus to be initiated and receive the incoming data transmission.

    摘要: An secured fax adapter apparatus uses a relay circuit to selectively couple a G3 fax to a secured line via a secured telephone unit (STU). The G3 fax can alternatively be coupled to a public switched telephone network (PSTN) via a PSTN port. The secured fax adapter has an enhanced DAA having a controller, a fax communication circuit, a current limited off hook detection circuit, a relay circuit for selectively coupling the external device ports, and a ring generation circuit for producing a square wave for ring generation. In one embodiment, the current-limited off-hook detection circuit uses a symmetrical network of transistors coupled to diodes to limit the current drawn by a load. In another embodiment, the relay circuit has four relays for selectively coupling the G3 fax to the fax communication circuit, the STU to the PSTN, the G3 fax to the PSTN, or the STU to the fax communication circuit. The relay circuit has an additional relay for coupling the off-hook detection circuit to the fax communication circuit.

If the use of the mail box is permitted, the CPU allows communication between the caller terminal and the mail box. Otherwise, normal facsimile communication is carried out.

    摘要: A device and a method for directing incoming calls from a single input telephone line to either a facsimile machine, a data modem, or a telephone is provided. An incoming call is initially assumed to be a voice call, with ample time provided for allowing a person to answer the phone. The device and method provide for "isolating" both a facsimile machine and a data modem until after a predetermined delay period, thus preventing them to answer the call. The delay period may, for example be three to seven rings, thus allowing ample time for an operator or answering machine to answer the call and not cause any serious inconvenience to the caller. If a person or answering machine has not answered the call within the delay period, an off-hook condition is simulated to the input telephone line, thus "answering" the call. The signal on the input telephone line is then detected. If the signal includes a DTMF digit, various functions are performed including resetting internal variables. If a facsimile handshake signal is detected, the facsimile machine is rung with a ring simulator. The facsimile machine can then read the incoming handshake signal and proceed in a conventional fashion. If, however, neither of these two signals are detected, and a telephone answering device has not answered the call, the data modem port is rung with the ring simulator. The data modem will then begin receiving the transmitted signal in a conventional fashion. If the call is answered during the delay period provided by the invention, and the transmission is a facsimile handshake signal, the call is automatically transferred to the waiting facsimile machine. If a person answers the telephone during the delay period and the call is a data modem transmission, the person must enter DTMF digits by pressing the appropriate digits on the touch-tone keypad of the telephone. The call will then be transferred to the data modem.
