The small watercraft adapted to be propelled by a water jet pump driven by an engine, comprises: a first cooling system for cooling a cylinder block of the engine, the first cooling system having an indirect cooling structure; and a second cooling system for cooling an exhaust system, the second cooling system having a direct cooling structure.

A pump frame (7) incorporates an upper opening (17), a lower opening (19) and a water passage (21) for connecting the two openings. To cause the lower opening (19) to be opened in water at a position adjacent a stern (1a) of a ship (1), the pump frame (7) is joined to a bottom (1b) of a ship (1). A pump casing (9) is secured to be stood erect above the pump frame (7). The pump casing (9) includes an impeller main shaft (33) stood erect. The impeller main shaft (33) is provided with an impeller (11) for sucking water from below the bottom (1b) through the lower opening (19) so as to pressurize the water. Water pressurized by the impeller (11) is jetted to a position behind the stern (1a) through a discharge pipe (13). As a result, the ship (1) is propelled. The foregoing water jet propulsion apparatus (5) enables sucking performance free from cavitation and excellent propelling performance to be obtained.

A nozzle having an undulating surface for enhancing the mixing of a primary flow with a secondary flow or ambient air, without requiring an ejector. The nozzle includes a nozzle structure and design for introducing counter-rotating vorticity into the primary flow either through (i) internal surface corrugations where an axisymmetric line through each corrugation is coincident with an axisymmetric line through the center of the flow passageway or (ii) through one or more sets of alternating convexities and cavities in the internal surface of the nozzle where an axisymmetric line through each convexity and cavity is coincident with an axisymmetric line through the center of the flow passageway, and where the convexities contract from the entrance end towards the exit end. Exit area mixing is also enhanced by one or more chevrons attached to the exit edge of the nozzle. The nozzle is ideally suited for application as a jet engine nozzle. When used as a jet engine nozzle, noise suppression with simultaneous thrust augmentation/minimal thrust loss is achieved.

The unit has an impeller housing located outside of the transom of a marine craft in which the unit is installed, which impeller housing has a separable portion that permits access to the main passage including the impeller when separated.
