ONE OF THE ISOMERS, I.E., 1-((1R)-2-ENDO-HYDROXY-3-ENDO-BORNYL) - 3 - (P-TOLYLSULFONYL)-UREA, IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL AS A HYPOGLYCEMIC AGENT.

Process for removing thiourea as an impurity from a crude alkali- or alkaline earth- metal rhodanide wherein an aqueous solution of the impure or crude rhodanide containing the thiourea is heated at certain elevated temperatures and in the presence of copper (II) oxide, preferably with an excess of the oxide with reference to a stoichiometric molar amount of the thiourea. Very pure rhodanides substantially free of thiourea are known to be useful in the manufacture of thiocyanates, especially organic thiocyanates, among other uses.

THE PROCESS INVOLVE THE USE OF A REACTION SOLVENT COMPRISING A MIXUTRE OF DIALKYL ETHERS OF POLYALKYLENE GLYCOLS HAVING AN AVERAGE MOLECULAR WEIGHT BETWEEN ABOUT 2000 AND ABOUT 400. BY-PRODUCT HYDROGEN SULFIDE IS CONTINUOUSLY STRIPPED FROM THE REACTION MIXTURE WITH EXCESS CARBON MONOXIDE, ABSORBED IN SOLVENT RECOVERED FROM THE REACTION PRODUCT MIXTURE, AND OXIDIZED TO SULFUR WITH AN OXYGEN-CONTAINING GAS IN THE PRESENCE OF A CARBON CATALYST. THE RESULTING SULFUR-CONTAINING SOLVENT MIXTURE IS RECYCLIED TO THE UREA SYNTHESIS REACTION. THUS, ONLY CARBON MONOXIDE, AMMONIA
