    摘要: An exhuast gas purifying apparatus for use in an automobile multi-cylinder engine of the type which has exhaust ports communicating with engine cylinders and through which exhaust gases are emitted subsequent to combustion of an air-fuel mixture. The exhaust gas purifying apparatus comprising a reducing catalyst unit and a three-way catalyst unit which are disposed in a main exhaust manifold which is connected at one end to a first group of the exhaust ports and at the other end to the atmosphere, and an auxiliary exhaust manifold connected at one end to a second group of the exhaust ports and at the other end to a portion of the main exhaust manifold at a location downstream of the reducing catalyst unit and upstream from the three-way catalyst unit. A pressure operated valve is disposed in a secondary air supply passage for introducing a secondary air into the auxiliary exhaust manifold by the utilization of the pulsating flow of the exhaust gases through the auxiliary exhaust manifold. This secondary air supply passage also has a control valve for regulating the flow of the secondary air therethrough during the opening of the pressure operated valve.

    摘要: A combination muffler and catalytic converter for an exhaust system. The unit comprises an outer housing having an inlet to receive exhaust gases, and a venturi is located within the housing and provides an aspirating effect to draw air into the housing from the atmosphere for the catalytic conversion. The venturi includes a diverging conical outlet section, and the gases are discharged from the outlet section through a plurality of perforations which aids in obtaining a uniform distribution of the gases to the catalytic unit that is located centrally of the housing. After passing through the catalytic unit, the gases are discharged from the housing through a discharge pipe having a closed inner end and perforations in its wall through which the gases flow. The perforated discharge pipe provides a self-controlling system which prevents overheating of the catalyst.

    摘要: A forced air control valve for an air injection system in an internal combustion engine has a diaphragm operated main valve member responsive to the vacuum from intake manifold to divert air from the exhaust system to atmosphere. A separate shifting or diverter valve for the exhaust system is temperature responsive and when the main valve member is open permits the supply of air to the exhaust manifold upstream of a catalytic converter only during cold engine operation. During warm engine operation when the main valve member is open, the separate shifting valve diverts the air to the catalytic converter. Upon deceleration during cold engine operation the separate diverter valve is shifted to divert air from the exhaust manifold to the catalytic converter. A temperature sensitive overheat switch is operable upon overheating of the catalyst to vent the forced air to atmosphere.

    摘要: Disclosed is an exhaust gas cleaning apparatus of an internal combustion engine, provided with a three-way catalytic converter and a vacuum-operated flow control valve. The flow control valve has a diaphragm for controlling the amount of secondary air directed into an exhaust manifold of the engine for the effective operation of the three-way catalytic converter. In order to move the diaphragm to increase or decrease the amount of secondary air, a vacuum chamber is formed on one side of the diaphragm. This vacuum chamber is opened to a vacuum port formed in the intake system of the engine for transmitting the vacuum signal from the port to the vacuum chamber. Further, in order to maintain a constant rate of movement of the diaphragm irrespective of the vacuum level at the port, means are provided for transmitting a vacuum signal from the port to another vacuum chamber formed on the other side of the diaphragm.
