The invention relates to a throttle device for delivery of a current of gas through a channel (1), the device comprising a flap (4) which is arranged so that it can pivot on an axle (5) and which is designed in such a way that, at a certain pressure force exerted by the current of gas, it is opened from a position in which the channel (1) is essentially closed. The invention is characterized in that it comprises at least one weight (7) which is arranged to rotate together with the flap (4) and is designed to deliver a torque to the axle (5) in conjunction with the pivoting of the flap (4). The invention is intended in particular for recovery boilers, or heating boilers or steam boilers for solid fuels. The invention achieves an improved air penetration in respect of air flowing into the boiler.

Removable apparatus for regulating air flow through an air port in a chemical recovery furnace. A plenum mounted adjacent an air port inside a wind box associated with the furnace supplies combustion air from the wind box to the furnace through the air port, and an adjustable damper mounted inside the plenum regulates the velocity and quantity of air flowing through the plenum. An access port in the plenum allows viewing of the air port opening through the plenum. An actuating mechanism withdraws the damper from the field of view to a retracted position wherein the damper depends from the top of the plenum chamber spaced apart from the air port opening. For airflow damping, the actuating mechanism moves the retracted damper toward the air port opening until the damper is adjacent to the opening; then a positioning mechanism pivots the damper to a predetermined position in the air stream adjacent the opening. The damper positioning mechanism comprises a spring loaded cylinder that holds the damper by spring tension, when retracted, above the flow of air through the plenum chamber. Upon further compression of the cylinder by the actuating mechanism, the reduced length of the compressed cylinder forces the damper downward into the air stream. When the actuating mechanism is reversed, the spring tension of the compressed cylinder pulls the damper upward to the retracted position.

A safety stovepipe damper assembly designed for use with a conventional type stovepipe and damper as used on coal, wood, or waste burning stoves. Provisions are made for presetting the damper to a specific low fire or closed position. A latch is also provided to hold the damper at an open position when desired. A heat activated means of releasing the damper from an open damper position is contained within the safety assembly. When activated by abnormally high stovepipe temperatures, the damper returns by gravity to its preset or closed position. The safety assembly can be used on vertically or horizontally installed stovepipe and damper assemblies in all sizes.

A prefabricated chimney assembly of the dual-wall type, adapted to be coupled to the flue outlet of a fireplace, is disclosed. The chimney assembly includes an inner conduit extending the length of the chimney assembly to form the flue through which combustion gases flow upwardly, and an outer conduit mounted in spaced relationship to the inner conduit so as to define an annular passage for conducting only outside air downwardly therethrough. An outside-air-inducing means is connected to the open lower end of the chimney assembly and includes a convergent nozzle, the upper end of which is coupled to the lower end of the flue, and an air-turning vane mounted in spaced relationship between the lower end of the chimney assembly and the lower end of the convergent nozzle so that the lower end of the convergent nozzle is positioned within the air-turning vane but spaced therefrom, whereby outside air flowing downwardly through the annular passage is induced into the flue for mixing with the hot combustion gases substantially to cool them and any suspended particulate matter, such as creosote, whereby it remains substantially entrained within the cooled flue gases.

A draft control system for furnaces comprises an auxiliary channel in communication both with ambient air and the flue of the furnace, a main draft control means for regulating the entrance of ambient, auxiliary draft air into the flue, and auxiliary draft control means mounted in the auxiliary channel for dampening the effect of extreme changes in external conditions on the main draft control means. Thus, uniform draft and efficient combustion is maintained in the furnace under a wide variety of conditions. The main draft control means comprises counter-balanced draft control plates which are initially set in an open position so that they can either open or close in order to efficiently regulate the draft in the flue. The auxiliary draft control means comprises, in one embodiment, an isolation damper plate rotationally mounted in the auxiliary channel, or, in a second embodiment, a set of louvred panels. The position of the auxiliary draft control means is automatically regulated by a pneumatic control device responsive to the efficiency of furnace combustion.

The mounting for the funnel shaped member may comprise a plurality of elongated members extending radially from the funnel shaped member to the associated flue. In another form of the invention a first duct is disposed within a second duct which is in fluid communication with an associated flue. The first duct may be rectangular in cross section and generally planar members may be selectively pivoted to restrict flow intermediate the first and second ducts. The first duct will ordinarily have no restriction on the flow of exhaust gases other than the restriction inherent in the inner duct.

A thermostat for a stove is disclosed. The thermal control unit is contained in a housing which has an aperture formed therein and includes a thermal control unit for detecting changes in the temperature of the stove. A flap is secured to the housing and is rotatable across the aperture so as to cover the aperture to any desired degree. The thermal control unit controls the position of the flap to control the effective area of the aperture, thereby to control the amount of air supplied to the stove. The thermal control unit, the flap and the aperture cooperate to ensure that the effective area of the aperture changes by an amount approximately proportional to the square of the magnitude of any change in the stove temperature detected by the thermal control unit. The thermal control unit may preferably comprise a bimetallic coil or a liquid expansion thermometer. At least one edge of the flap, or at least one edge of the aperture, or at least one edge of each is curved in such a manner as to produce the desired change in area, in cooperation with the thermal control unit, responsive to stove temperature changes.
