Abstract: The present invention provides methods, antibodies and kits for detecting and/or quantifying expression of both non-nucleic acid molecules, such as proteins, and nucleic acid molecules in a single sample or single cell. The antibody is covalently conjugated to an oligonucleotide, such as a single-stranded DNA molecule, which comprises an identification tag and a blocking group, such as a ddNTP or an inverted dTTP, which prevents extension of the oligonucleotide by a polymerase. The method comprises the steps of reverse transcribing the conjugated oligonucleotide and the target nucleic acid simultaneously, amplifying both transcription production, and detecting the amplicons thereof. The method is also useful for detecting and/or quantifying the number of cells in a sample expressing a given non -nucleic acid molecule (e.g. protein).

Abstract: A portable device which detects a Raman signal from an analyte of interest contained in or suspected to contain in a sample. The portable device includes a laser source in optical communication with a dichroic mirror, an objective lens optically positioned to consolidate the laser from the laser source to the sample, (i) a pair of rotatable filters in optical communication with the dichroic mirror and an optical transmission module or (ii) a first band-pass filter in optical communication with the dichroic mirror and an optical transmission module, and a detector optically positioned to receive and detect a Raman signal produced from the laser incident on the analyte of interest. The dichroic mirror directs the laser from the laser source to the sample through the objective lens and transmits any Raman signal from the sample toward the detector. The detector is absent of a spectrometer and detects the Raman signal.

In particular, the piezoelectric thin film comprises at least two adjacent NbO2 planes in an antiphase boundary, the at least two adjacent NbO2 planes displaced from each other by about half a lattice length in either the (100), (010) or (100) crystallographic plane. The present invention also relates to methods of fabricating the piezoelectric thin films.

Abstract: A water-soluble polymer having an aliphatic polycarbonate backbone, a first carbonate monomer with at least one hydrophilic functionality, and a second carbonate monomer with at least one hydrophobic functionality is able to completely and quickly eliminate a virus from a human and/or animal cell. The at least one hydrophilic functionality is a sulfate, a sulfonate, a carboxylate, and/or a phosphate and the at least one hydrophobic functionality is an alkyl. The hydrophilic/hydrophobic functionalities of the polymer may be tuned to enhance the antiviral properties of the polymer and/or to decrease any cytotoxicity associated with the application of the polymer to a human and/or animal cell. The antiviral polymer is biocompatible and biodegradable.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method of determining a structure of ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecules, the method comprising: contacting the RNA molecules with a modifying agent to obtain modified RNA molecules; reverse transcribing the modified RNA molecules; sequencing the product obtained from the preceding step to generate sequencing reads; and analysing the sequencing reads to determine the structure of the RNA molecules. In a preferred embodiment, the RNA molecules consist of RNA molecules of a single cell, and the modifying agent is 2-methylnicotinic acid imidazolide-azide (NAI-N3). There is also provided a method of classifying cells into one or more cell populations, the method comprising: determining the structure of RNA molecules in each cell; and classifying the cells into one or more cell populations based on similarity in the structure of their RNA molecules.
