Abstract: An electrospray ionization emitter according to various aspects described herein can include an emitter body formed using fused silica. The emitter body can comprise a fluid conduit segment that includes a liquid connection end that has been coated with polyetheretherketone (PEEK) on at least one portion thereof. The liquid connection end can have a first outer diameter that is configured to be connected to a sample source to receive a sample liquid for ionization therefrom. The emitter body can further comprise an ionization discharge segment that is fluidly connected to the fluid conduit segment. The ionization discharge segment can have an ionization discharge end that is coated with a conductive material on at least one portion thereof and configured to have a second outer diameter that allows ionization of the liquid sample.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for analyzing samples using mass spectrometry are disclosed. The apparatus includes a reaction device configured to dissociate sample ions into fragments by reacting the sample ions with a charged species (e.g., electrons) such as through ECD, EID, or EIEIO. The kinetic energy of the charged species is such that the fragments may be detected and produce spectra that allow for the determination of isomeric species in the sample and the location of double bonds and/or the orientation of those double bonds within the sample molecules. The fragments may include radical fragments and non-radical fragments. Spectra resulting from analysis of the fragments may allow for the determination of the oxygen-radical fragments resulting from the dissociation of the sample molecules as confirmation of the presence of those radical fragments.

Abstract: A ring stacked accelerator for use in a mass spectrometer includes a plurality of ring shaped plates arranged in a stack and is electrically coupled to a voltage divider that allows a substantially homogeneous electric field to be produced when the stack is energized. The voltage divider can include resistors and capacitors, where the capacitors are chosen to compensate for parasitic capacitances experienced by the plates. The ring stacked accelerator can be energized using an RF pulse. The ring stack accelerator can include one or more balancing capacitors for correcting effects that cause nonlinearity.

Abstract: Dynamic skimmer pulsing and dynamic equilibration times are used for MS and MS/MS scans. A target percentage transmission of the ion beam is calculated based on a previous percentage transmission and a previous TIC or a previous highest intensity of a previous cycle time. An equilibration time is calculated based on the current percentage transmission and the target percentage transmission. A skimmer of a tandem mass spectrometer is controlled to attenuate the ion beam to the target percentage transmission to prevent saturation of a detector of the tandem mass spectrometer and to increase the dynamic range of the tandem mass spectrometer. The tandem mass spectrometer is controlled to perform an MS scan or an MS/MS scan after the calculated equilibration time to reduce the cycle time.

Abstract: A plurality of MRM transitions to be used to monitor a sample are received and divided into two or more contiguous groups. At least one sentinel transition is selected in each group that identifies a next group of the two or more contiguous groups that is to be monitored. A first group of the two or more contiguous groups is placed on a duty cycle list of the tandem mass spectrometer. One or more compounds are separated from the sample and ionized, producing an ion beam. A series of MRM transitions read from the duty cycle list are executed on the ion beam by the tandem mass spectrometer. When at least one sentinel transition of the first group is detected, a next group identified by the sentinel transition is placed on the list.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for microbial identification using cleavable tags. Control information is sent to a mass spectrometer to fragment one or more nucleic acid primers labeled with a first tag and monitor for an intensity of the first tag in a mass spectrometry (MS) method. An ion source provides a beam of ions from a polymerase chain reaction amplified sample that includes one or more nucleic acid primers labeled with the first tag. The first tag binds to one or more nucleic acid primers of a known microbe and is cleaved from the nucleic acid primers during the MS method. The mass spectrometer receives the beam of ions and is adapted to perform the MS method on the beam of ions. If the intensity of the first tag received from the mass spectrometer exceeds a threshold value, the known microbe is identified in the sample.

Abstract: An RF voltage is applied across each electrode of a first array of evenly spaced, parallel, and coplanar electrodes and its corresponding electrode of a second array of evenly spaced, parallel, and coplanar electrodes. The RF voltage varies in amplitude according to an RF voltage amplitude gradient. The RF voltage produces an array of different quadrupole RF electric fields in a uniform gap between the first array and the second array. A DC voltage is superimposed on each electrode of the first array and its corresponding electrode of the second array. The DC voltage varies according to a DC voltage gradient in order to produce a DC electric field in the uniform gap. When ions are introduced in the uniform gap, the DC electric field causes the ions to drift toward quadrupole RF electric fields with increasing RF voltage amplitudes where the ions are trapped according to their m/z.

Abstract: Systems and methods are provided for multiplexed precursor ion selection using a filtered noise field (FNF). Two or more different precursor ions are selected using a processor. The processor calculates an FNF waveform. The calculated FNF waveform is applied to a continuous beam of ions using the processor. The processors sends information to a mass spectrometer, which includes an ion source that provides the continuous beam of ions and a first quadrupole that receives the continuous beam of ions, so that the first quadrupole applies the calculated FNF waveform to the continuous beam of ions. The first quadrupole applies the calculated FNF waveform to the continuous beam of ions by applying the calculated FNF waveform between pairs of rods or between pairs of auxiliary electrodes placed between rods.
