Abstract:
A low-drag seal arrangement for a thermal management valve including a housing having a chamber and at least one bore for flowing a fluid medium through the at least one bore between a location exterior of the housing and the chamber of the housing. A rotor is configured to rotate within the chamber of the housing relative to the bore. The rotor moves between a closed position where the flow of fluid medium through the at least one bore is blocked, an open position where the fluid medium flows through the at least one bore and an intermediate position where the flow of fluid medium through the at least one bore is partially restricted by the rotor's position relative to the bore. The low-drag seal arrangement also includes a face seal piston positioned within the at least one bore and configured to move axially within the bore.
Abstract:
A reduced noise flexplate assembly and method of construction is provided. The assembly includes a central plate that is generally disc shaped and extends radially from an axis. A ring gear is disposed annularly about the central plate and presents a plurality of ring teeth that extend radially therefrom for engaging a pinion gear coupled to a starter of an automobile. A noise plate is attached to the central plate with a plurality of plate fasteners and extends circumferentially about the axis. The noise plate includes a flange and a lower lip extending generally axially and radially outwardly from the inside flange to a maximum deflection zone adjacent to the ring teeth of the ring gear. The noise plate is frictionally engaged with and slideably moveable relative to the central plate and/or ring gear to reduce noise and reduce vibrations during starting of the automobile by converting friction into heat.
Abstract:
A variable capacity vane pump for an automobile includes a pump control ring positioned within the housing to move about a pivot. A rotor is positioned within a cavity of the control ring such that a position of the control ring determines an offset between a center of the cavity and an axis of rotation of the rotor. A first control chamber is provided between the pump housing and a first outer surface of the control ring. The first outer surface is positioned on an opposite side of the control ring as the working fluid chambers within the cavity. A second control chamber is provided between the pump housing and a second outer surface of the control ring. A return spring biases the control ring toward a position of maximum volumetric capacity against the forces created by the pressurized fluid within the first and second control chambers.
Abstract:
An electric fluid pump and method of regulating flow of liquid therethrough is provided. The pump has an electric motor including a stator and a rotor, wherein the rotor is supported for rotation to drive an impeller that is fixed thereto for rotation to pump coolant from a fluid inlet to a fluid outlet. A controller is in operable, closed loop communication with the electric motor, and the impeller is operable to rotate in a first rotary pumping direction and an opposite second rotary pumping direction in response to a signal from the controller. The first rotary pumping direction produces a first positive flow rate of coolant outwardly from the fluid outlet and the second rotary pumping direction produces a second positive flow rate of coolant outwardly from the fluid outlet, with the first positive flow rate being greater than the second positive flow rate.
Abstract:
A variable capacity vane includes a pump control ring which is moveable to alter the capacity of the pump and the pump can be operated at either of at least two selected equilibrium pressures. The pump ring is moved by at least first and second control chambers, the control chambers abutting the control ring such that pressurized fluid supplied to them acts on the pump control ring to move the pump control ring to reduce the volumetric capacity of the pump. When pressurized fluid is supplied to only one control chamber, the pump operates at a first equilibrium pressure and when pressurized fluid is also supplied to the second chamber, the pump operates at a second equilibrium pressure. Pressurized fluid can also be supplied only to the second control chamber to operate the pump at a third equilibrium pressure and/or additional control chambers can be provided if required.
Abstract:
A variable displacement variable pressure vane pump system provides lubrication oil to a mechanical system. The system has a first control mechanism, which can be a control chamber directly acting on the control slider or a control chamber and control cylinder which acts on the control slider and a second control mechanism which is a control chamber and control cylinder which acts on the control slider. A control valve, operated by an engine control unit or other suitable control mechanism, selectively provides pressurized lubrication oil to the second control mechanism to allow the output of the pump system to more closely match the requirements of the mechanical system.
Abstract:
A method of manufacturing a torque-transmitting component includes providing a flat blank to a transfer press having a plurality of stations and performing a plurality of pressing operations, in which the flat blank is formed into a cup shape, rough splines are formed on the cup shape, and the rough splines are further pressed to define smooth splines. The component includes a continuous smooth inner diameter defined by a punch of the transfer press and a plurality of smooth splines defined by a die of the transfer press. The minor diameter of the splines is not machined to form the splines.
Abstract:
A locking pawl arrangement with a motion compliance mechanism for use with various automotive devices having a rotating hub with a plurality of teeth. There is provided a pawl that is moveable between a disengaged position wherein the pawl is not engaged with the rotating hub, an engaged positioned where the pawl is engaged with the hub and an intermediate position that is between the disengaged position and engaged position. A locking cam is in contact with the pawl and moves between a disengaged position, an engaged position, and an intermediate position against the pawl. There is further provided an actuator that is engageable with the locking cam. The actuator moves between a retracted position and an extended position, thereby causing the locking cam to move the pawl between the intermediate position, disengaged position and engaged position.

Abstract:
A modular clutch assembly with two independent power sources and a connection with an output device. The two independent power sources and the output device can take many different forms. The modular clutch assembly has a housing that connects the two power sources with the output device and controls power transfer using an inner clutch and an upper clutch. There is further provided an output hub connected to the output device, where the output hub extends into the modular clutch assembly for selective rotation.
