    Abstract: A receptacle retainer for holding a receptacle to one of two members to be fastened in position to be coupled with a stud mounted on the other of the two members to form a fastener for holding the two members together. The retainer includes structure for engaging the surfaces surrounding an aperture in the one member so as to be fixed in position while permitting passage of a portion of the stud therethrough. A body portion of the retainer extends from the one member and is adapted to retain the receptacle thereon. Retention of the receptacle retainer is of the type which permits the receptacle to be held with limited free movement on the one member so as to be retained in the proximity of the aperture thereon and in position to be freely moved into fastened interengagement with the stud when the stud and receptacle are coupled to hold the two members together.

    Abstract: A variable height receptacle adapted to be mounted on one of two members to be fastened and to be removably coupled with a stud mounted on the other of two members to be fastened. The receptacle includes a tubular housing having an opening on at least one end to the interior thereof and surfaces thereon for attachment to the one member. The housing has a threaded surface thereon and a spring is positioned in the housing in engagement with the threaded surface in position to be shifted along the threaded surfaces by relative rotation between the spring and housing thereby providing a variable height receptacle. One of the spring and a stud coupled with the other member has a spiral cam slot and the other of the spring and stud has a cam follower so that relative rotation therebetween with the spring shifted to a predetermined height in the housing will shift the stud and spring between the fastened and unfastened positions.

    Abstract: A shaft attachment assembly for fastening a member to a shaft. The shaft has a receptacle end which includes an axial opening therein. A stud is provided for engagement with the receptacle end and has a body portion and a head portion. One of the stud and the receptacle end has surfaces forming a tapered cam surface terminating in a locking detent and the other of the stud and receptacle end has a transverse pin extending laterally therefrom. The member to be fastened to the shaft has an axial passageway therethrough positioned so that when the member is aligned with the receptacle end of the shaft, the passageway and the member will be aligned with the opening of the shaft. The body portion of the stud is extendable through the passageway and the member and the opening in the shaft to bring the pin into rotatable engagement with the cam surface. A resilient tension element is on the assembly to permit relative axial movement as the stud is rotated and the pin follows the cam surface to the locking detent thereby rigidly fastening the member to the stud. The resilient tension element also permits relative axial movement as the stud is rotated and the pin follows the cam slot from the locking detent to the disengaged position where the stud can be removed and the member and the shaft disengaged.

    Abstract: A stud for interengagement with a rigid receptacle to form a fastener assembly. The stud includes an elongated body member with an enlarged head on one end. A gripping surface is on the head to facilitate gripping and rotation of the stud. A spring is also on the head to facilitate axial movement of the stud with respect to the rigid receptacle. One end of the stud has a spiral cam slot terminating in a locking detent thereon. Therefore, when the stud and receptacle are positioned on one of two members respectively and brought into interengagement, the cam slot will be aligned with each cam follower. Thereafter relative rotation between the stud and receptacle will cause the cam follower to enter the cam slot until seated in the locking detent with the assistance of the spring permitting axial movement of the stud with respect to the rigid receptacle thereby locking the two members together. Relative rotation between the stud and receptacle in the opposite direction will move each cam follower from the locking detent and along the cam slot until disengagement occurs whereupon the stud and receptacle can be separated and the two members released with the assistance of the spring permitting axial movement of the stud with respect to the rigid receptacle.

    Abstract: A power drill has a housing holding a planetary gear transmission and a motor. A drive stem rotatable in the housing about the axis is rotationally coupled to the planet carrier, and a chuck body is rotatable on the housing. A driver axially bearing on the jaws is axially shiftable to position jaws in the chuck, and a sleeve threaded to the driver is rotatable to position the jaws in the chuck body. The drive stem can be coupled either to the chuck body for rotating a tool held by the jaws in a screw or drill mode or to the sleeve in a tighten/loosen mode for tool exchange. A first spring bears axially inward against a front face of the transmission ring gear with an adjustable axially inwardly directed force, and a second spring bears axially against a rear face of the ring gear.
