摘要: An improved holographic backlight and liquid crystal display system. The holographic backlight comprises a cold cathode fluorescent tube for providing white light, and a light pipe disposed to receive the white light. A phase retarding film layer is attached to a first surface of the light pipe. A double-layer reflection/transmission hologram is disposed on an output surface of the light pipe opposite the film layer. Light from the cold cathode fluorescent tube is injected into the light pipe, and is diffracted off of the double-layer hologram. This produces quasi-collimated s-polarized light having well-defined spectral colors that is transmitted by the hologram in an array of red, green, and blue patches of light corresponding to the clear apertures of the red, green, and blue elements of an active matrix liquid crystal display. The result is a liquid crystal display with high display brightness, reduced battery power requirements, increased battery lifetime, and high contrast over a wide viewing angle.

摘要: A full-color liquid crystal display employing an off-axis holographic color filter. The liquid crystal display comprises a liquid crystal spatial light modulator that includes a mosaic of electrically independent picture elements. An illumination source is provided that produces nearly collimated white predominantly S polarized illuminating light. The holographic color filter is disposed adjacent the liquid crystal spatial light modulator that comprises three layers of overlapping holographic lenses designed to focus red, green, and blue light, respectively, onto corresponding picture elements of the spatial light modulator. A prism element is disposed adjacent to the holographic color filter for coupling the illuminating light from the illumination source to the holographic color filter. A polarizer is disposed on an output surface of the prism element opposite from the holographic color filter that transmits P polarized light but blocks S polarized light. A projection optical system is disposed to receive P polarized light transmitted by the polarizer and produce an image for viewing.

摘要: A zero-degree mirror reflection hologram is embedded into a vehicle windshield to reduce veiling glare. The hologram partially reflects sunlight in the visible wavelength range incident on the windshield between 0 and substantially 70 degrees, and therefore blocks a substantial portion of visible sunlight that would otherwise pass through the windshield and reflect off the dashboard. The portion of light that does reflect off the dashboard which could enter the driver's eyebox does not reflect appreciably off the hologram because the hologram reflection peak is in the ultraviolet at high off-axis angles.

摘要: A compact, inexpensive and mass-producible optical display system for an automobile creates a highly visible and sharp, high contrast and pleasing, multi-color magnified virtual image of a primary instrument cluster at a viewing distance which is greater than the actual optical distance between the dashboard and the driver's eyes in order to enhance instrument readability, minimize driver eye strain, and reduce eye focus problems which are associated with transitioning between the far range viewing used for watching the road ahead and the near range viewing used for glancing at the instruments. A non-pupil forming display system uses a single off-axis aspherical mirror with power to create a virtual image of a miniaturized, multi-color passive image source, such as a segmented LCD panel, which is backlighted by a small filament incandescent light bulb. The aspheric surface is optimized to minimize aberrations and reduce vertical disparity and field curvature. The image source is pre-distorted to compensate for distortion in the off-axis configuration. A holographic diffusing screen element laminated onto the image source provides uniform high brightness and uniform contrast over the entire field-of-view which is visible from an eyellipse sufficient to accomodate most of the driver population, minimizes the visual impact of any optical aberrations near the edge of the viewing area, and provides the non-pupil forming system with some of the desirable optical properties of a pupil forming system.

摘要: A substantially ghost-free head-up display for a vehicle such as an automobile is disclosed. A head-up display unit projects the image beam toward the vehicle windshield for reflection back toward the viewer's eye. The windshield is slightly tapered so that the reflected images from the outside and inside surfaces of the windshield are reflected at slightly different angles, chosen so that the images substantially overlap at the viewer's eye. Use of a properly selected taper results in substantially ghost-free operation. The taper can be achieved by sandwiching a tapered layer of transparent material such as polyvinylbutyral between two windshield singlets.

摘要: A process for forming a single-notch optical filter having a continually and accurately varying periodic profile. An optical medium is coated on a uniform substrate where the homogeneous optical medium produces a rugate filter, so that the profile of the refractive index follows a sinusoidal pattern and Bragg's law. As the optical medium is coated on the substrate, the depositing film is monitored by optical techniques, and feedback information is provided to a computer driven by a pre-programmed process control algorithm so that real time control of the manufacturing process may be accomplished.

摘要: An optical coating which is stable upon sustained exposure to water vapor is provided by a low-temperature photochemical vapor deposition process. First, there are provided a first vapor phase reactant containing silicon, a second selected vapor phase reactant, and an oxygen-containing precursor which are capable of interacting upon radiation inducement to form the corresponding oxides of the vapor phase reactants. A chosen substrate is exposed to the first and second selected vapor phase reactants in predetermined proportions and the chosen oxygen-containing precursor in the presence of radiation of a predetermined wavelength to induce a reaction to form a coating on the substrate. The coating comprises silicon dioxides containing a predetermined proportion of the second oxide, such as lead oxide. The coating maintains stable optical properties upon sustained exposure to water vapor. Graded index optical elements as well as quarterwave stack structure may be formed by this process.
